Very happy that my review of Aaron McKeil’s ‘Cosmopolitan Imaginaries and International Disorder’ - exploring why modern cosmopolitan ideas and movements have been unable to overturn the norms of international order - is available now in @iajournal.bsky.social

'The second result of our difference about human sin is that we disagree about the possible extent of social change and the essential adaptability of human institutions.'

Lost BBC broadcast transcript where Martin Wight explores modernity and institutional change, aired after 'The Goon Show.'

"'Security is mainly a matter of giving the intended aggressor fair warning of what he would be up against.' 'A definition of aggression...is a signpost for the guilty.' Discuss"

Check out my opinion piece for @e-international.bsky.social. I argue that Trump's diplomatic conduct has not undermined Diplomacy as an institution of International Society; rather it has reminded us that it is contingent upon reciprocated practices. A 10-minute read!

Opinion – Trump, Shattered Diplomacy and International Society
Trump’s break with traditional diplomatic norms is a potential pivot point where new expectations and possibilities for state behaviour may emerge.

- Abstract reviewing for @standrewsipt.bsky.social
- Tutoring
- Editing a podcast episode for E-IR

And

- Practically foxtrotting around the office to today’s soundtrack of… 😂

Turnout of #deutschewahl #Wahl2025 highest since reunification at 82.5%, but areas of AfD popularity visibly appear to be lower or below average (using @reuters.com data). If a ⚫️🔴/⚫️🔴🟢 coalition stagnates, the AfD have been placed in prime position to claim 'legitimate alternative' status. Worrying.

In a single statement about Ukraine, J.D. Vance illustrates how little he understands of what national sovereignty entails conceptually. That said, as the overarching ideology dictates that all things can undergo commodification, maybe it was only a matter of time?

Cash 4 Norms all along.

So happy to say that I will be chairing 2 Roundtables at the @mybisa.bsky.social conference in June in Belfast. The 1st on #openaccess #polsci and the 2nd on the future of the English School. Also, I will be presenting my paper to a BISA CRIPT panel on Pacifist International Theory. Come along! ☺️

The @thesun.co.uk really is a rag. Yesterday’s paper vs BBC on repealing the Legacy Act. “Labour’s hard left often side with terrorists.” 🥱🙄🙄 Just blatant rightist rubbish that forgot ‘news’ some time ago.

Positionality statement: I am a Liverpool @lfcr.bsky.social fan though, so..

Once again I find myself in awe of Martin Wight’s style as a young writer. What a line:

“It is easy to make a bargain with the Devil, and impossible to see that he keeps it.”

A student asked me "Does @just-stopoil.bsky.social believe they have had an effect?"
- Est. 4.4 Bn barrels of oil unlicensed for drilling due to action.
- That's 1.9 Mn tonnes of CO2e.
- That's 1,339,422 barrels of oil stopped per arrest.
- That's 24 Mn barrels per imprisonment.

Yes. Yes it does.

Wight reminding me why his pacifist thought slaps! Here, talking about #pacifism, #internationalrelations, and British #Imperialism in India, responding to the then Bishop of Bombay Richard D Acland’s claim that pacifism exaggerates the sanctity of life and that imperialism is a Christian act - 1936
