Gintama Volume 64
Gintama Volume 64 And here’s 64. We’ve got 18 volume versions left. I wrote a recap of what’s going on with this project here. This volume is the one where the Joui Four finally reunite. Also it’s got Kamui’s fight against Umibouzu and Kagura. It has the rest of the Kouka flashback/backstory, too. I’ve been working on this stuff a lot in hopes of eventually finishing this before I die. So far, in addition to what we’ve released, we’ve cleaned/redrawn everything in volume 60-63. I still have to do the extras for all those though. It really takes a while and it’s pretty tedious but doing some of it every day is working. I still have to do the vast majority of volumes 46-59 though which is still a ton. I probably will need to take some breaks though. My head is melting from spending so many hours going through these. The typesetting and translations are all done but I do need to adjust the text somewhat, do the inline sound-effects, and clean and redraw everything and fix the edges of the pages which differ from the digital and physical raws as an artifact of the automation process by lining up the physical raws with upscaled digital ones. Meanwhile, there’s another 3-Gatsu no Lion in a couple weeks. I’m translating Shima volume 6 too. Anyhow I hope you all enjoy these. The Gintama Yoshiwara in Flames movie is coming out soon, anyone seeing that?

Gintama Volume 65
Gintama Volume 65 Okay, here we are at 65. We’ve got 19 volume versions left. I wrote a recap of what’s going on with this project here. This volume is primarily the main closure/battle with Umibouzu, Kagura, and Kamui. It also has one of the Utsuro fights. Volume 64, the next one we’ll do, is the one with the flashback about Koudka, Kagura’s mom, for the most part. This has a little of it. The most annoying thing with this volume was they included one of the popularity poll results but they rearranged it slightly so the whole thing had to be re-redrawn and re-typeset from scratch. I’ve been working on this project at least a little every day. So now every volume has at least a little bit done. But I think for the most part at this point I’m gonna focus on just going through them one volume at a time rather than trying to do all of one thing or another in each volume. Like I did the first and last page of each volume, I did the title pages and ending pages of all the chapters in some volumes, I looked up bits and redid them because I knew there were parts of the translation I wanted to change, I did a whole bunch of quick gimme-pages, stuff like that. But now pretty much all that’s left is hack away at each volume which is gonna take like 10+ hours of work each and there’s 18 more of them. But even with all the progress we’ve made, and I think it’s gone really well so far, we still have a long way to go and I’m gonna have to take breaks to go back to Shima and stuff like that. Also volume 64 is almost done I just gotta translate the extras.

The JOJOLands Ch. 32 Hey ya’ll welcome to the first new The JOJOLands chapter of the year. A bunch of exciting stuff happens in this one so go check it out. Next one comes out February 18th Japan time. We released our high-quality version of volume 7 a little while ago so go check that out if you haven’t yet. In the meantime, Gintama volume 64 and 65 are almost done and I’m in the middle of translating Shima volume 6. That’s about it right now.

Gintama Volume 66
Gintama Volume 66 Hey here’s another one, here’s Gintama 66. We’ve got 29 volume versions left to do now. I wrote a recap of what’s going on with this project here. This volume has a bunch of stuff about Utsuro’s origins and motives. This is the first part of the story where Sorachi-sensei started acting like “Ok the series is really heading for the end now” and then it went for 11 more volumes. There’s an extra page added. Page 125-127 were originally just one page in the original chapter 595. That little speech was expanded somewhat. Anyhow I’m really glad we’re making progress on these at a fairly good pace now. In the past few weeks I worked on all the re-cleaning and re-redrawing and re-typesetting of SFX for a bunch of random pages or little chunks of volumes in an attempt to get every volume “partially done” rather than do an entire volume done at once. Like I did all of the title pages and tables of contents and character-intro pages in the beginnings of these. I was gonna keep going with that and do something like “do all the title pages of every chapter” but we’re doing all the way back to volume 46 remember so any time you do anything like that it’s 20-something times, and if it’s in every chapter it’s like 180+ times. And if you’re gonna do all that you might as well just focus on getting something out/done while you have time, because I dunno if I’ll still have time to work on these things months from now depending on how my schedule goes. So I think from here I’m mainly gonna stick to just working on “the next one” and working backwards. Uh besides that I’m still working on Managing Director Shima 6. That’s about it at the moment. Well, enjoy, everyone! We’re just slowly making our way up this mountain of Gintama chapters.

The JOJOLands Volume 7
The JOJOLands Volume 7 And here’s volume 7! So you know the deal at this point hopefully, this is the final archival version of these chapters with all the changes by the author and such. There’s not much different but it uses the scans of the Japanese volumes so this is the highest quality you can get. Man this series has been going for nearly 3 years now huh? It started back in February 2023. And now we’ve finished a whole 7 volumes of it. Ya know the earlier Jojo parts only ran for about 3 years but they were more volumes because it was weekly back in the 90’s. Part 1 was just 5 volumes and part 2 was 7 volumes so The JOJOLands is already longer than both of those also in terms of volumes. We’ve come pretty far huh? Meanwhile I’m working on more Gintama and more Shima as usual. I’ve been trying to get a bunch of stuff in these Gintama volumes done quickly so this project doesn’t last forever but I think I need to cool it because it’s eating up all my time, there’s 4000 pages to go through and there’s just no way to do that all quickly, it’s a marathon.

Gintama Volume 67
Gintama V67 cover Hey, we’re back, first release of the new year, here’s Gintama volume 67. We’ve got 21 volume versions left. I wrote a recap of what’s going on with this project here. As usual this one has better resolution, more image on the tops and bottoms of the pages, fixes from the author, extras, made the fonts better, it’s got sound effects in-line, all that. With this volume we’ve finally done volume versions of the entire Silver Soul Arc. Man that arc was long wasn’t it? As always this project is sort of a side project where we just gotta get some of it done every once in a while until the whole thing is finished because it takes several days of work to do one volume and there’s a ton of them, so I can’t really marathon through them all. Maybe we’ll finish all the way to volume 46 eventually, we’ll see. After this is the arc about Utsuro and Oboro’s origins and then the arc with Kamui and Kouka. Meanwhile, The JOJOLands volume 7 is almost done and we started working on Managing Director Shima volume 6 but I haven’t gotten too far in that yet.

Managing Director Shima Kōsaku Volume 5
The cover of Managing Director Shima Kōsaku Volume 5 Hey everyone we made it to Managing Director volume 5! This is probably the last release of the year, unless we finish the volume version of The JOJOLands volume 7 soon. Man I’ve done a lot of hours of working on this series this year. Most of this volume is a story arc about Chūfā CEO Sun Rui and Noriko. With this, we’ve gotten 7 volumes of Shima done this year. Which I think is pretty good given that I spent a lot of the year balancing like 50 things and trying not to keep anything from dropping or falling apart. So I’m counting that as a win. As it stands we’ve got 3 more volumes of Managing Director and then 6 in Executive Managing Director and 5 in Senior Managing Director to finish the whole Director arc(s). We’ll see how much of that we can do next year, but as always I’m trying to make sure I don’t overdo it on this because I’m doing most of this project on my own and I need to save my energy for various other parts of my life sometimes. Also the volumes get shorter after Managing Director finishes, so each volume should go quicker. We really have gotten through a lot of it now, we’ve done 35 volumes of this series. For the record, of the longer series we’ve done we’ve released: 45 volumes of Gintama (Plus the Koujien Fanbook stuff) 37 volumes of Toriko (Plus the original one-shot and some extras) 16 volumes of Innocent+Rouge 17 volumes of Kokou no Hito 16 volumes of Gash (Plus various bonus things) 13 wide-bans of Takeshi (Which is like 26-ish if it were regular volumes) 27 volumes of JoJolion + ~8 of The JOJOLands + 1 Rohan so about 36 volumes of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure (Plus two novels which are quite long) 31.5 volumes of 81diver So Shima is creeping up towards being one of the series we’ve released the most volumes for. Which I think is pretty impressive for a series with a ton of complicated economics and business jargon on half the pages. I was just thinking about that, given we’re releasing it pretty quickly all things considered. Though also some of those series I worked on more volumes of it but with another group, like I did all of Innocent and 81diver but those were done with Utopia Scans and a few other small groups. So it depends on what you want to count it. (Also the typesetting on Shima is really simple which helps, we usually typeset a whole volume within a few days). Anyhow I’m thankful to folks who’ve stuck with this series, I really love it. I’m gonna keep going with it for now, we’ll see how far we get. I appreciate all the staff who I’ve worked with to get everything released this year that we have. If we don’t release anything else this year, I hope you all have happy holidays and a happy new year.

Volume 7 of The JOJOLands just came out so we’ll be doing a volume version of that sometime soon (It needs to ship to me and I need to scan it and all that first). Next month’s chapter comes out January 19th Japan time. Meanwhile we’re working on more Gintama volumes. I’m trying to finish up this Shima volume. That’s what’s happening right now. Anyway if you’re reading this it’s on a timer cause I have to like work at my job now it’s 10AM on a Wednesday.

Nothing’s really changed since the last one, we’re just gonna keep going at some pace or another. I don’t think we’re gonna keep up this pace of like one a week because it would drive me insane doing this all the time. Even though these are a few days apart I’m working on them for probably more of my time than is reasonably justifiable for this project. I’m gonna go back to doing the other stuff for a bit.

3-Gatsu no Lion (March Comes in Like a Lion) 217 Cover Hey yall here’s a new 3-Gatsu no Lion chapter. Kiriyama is playing Tsujii in this one. Will it be Good Tsujii or Bad Tsujii today? The next chapter comes out next issue of Young Animal, (This is the first time two chapters came out in a row in like… a while) which comes out on December 26th Japan time so I’m probably gonna be busy then because that’d be Christmas in the US where I am. So that may be a day or two at least after it comes out in Japan, just so ya’ll know. Next week is the next The JOJOLands chapter. I’m going back to working on Managing Director Shima volume 5.

Gintama Volume 69
Gintama Volume 69 Ok here we are again, but with volume 69 (nice, etc. etc.) We’ve got 23 volume versions left to do now. I wrote a recap of what’s going on with this project here. This is the next one. We’ll be going backwards with the later volumes first so in case we don’t finish at least the finale of the series has a high quality version. Also the older volumes have a lot more text because there’s fewer action scenes, so those would also take longer. As usual, this is a better resolution version of these 10 chapters. All scanned with the physical volumes. It includes various changes Sorachi-sensei made after the magazine version, more image on the top and bottom of the pages, the extras between the chapters, we upgraded some fonts and some text, and we included good quality versions of all the color pages and such. These really are a lot of work, they involve redoing all the cleaning and redraws, checking all the text, writing all the sound effects inline, all that. I hope you all like these, I think they look really good once they’re all done. We’ve finished scanning and running all the automations on all the volumes from V46 to the end, and a couple quick things like the volume covers are all cleaned. Now we just need to clean and redraw about 4,350 pages, which take a few minutes each, but there’s a lot, so it’s a huge effort we’ll do over months/years. I’m probably gonna go back to focusing on translating more Shima Kousaku volumes now. Teppy is helping clean these too, so say thanks to him folks. And we’ve got Jojo next week, so have a good week everyone.

Gintama Volume 70
Gintama V70 Cover Hey everybody, we’re back to this. I talked about this in multiple other posts at this point, but I’ve wanted to at some point do volume versions of all the Gintama chapters we did with physical Shounen Jump scans over the course of like a decade. The main issue is it takes a lot of hours of “busy work” to do and all you have to show for 20-30 hours of work is one volume out of 25 (now 24 after this one). So I was trying to find a way to speed it up by automating some of it. Luigi has helped out with that so I think ENOUGH of this is automated now that we can maybe eventually do all of them, but it’ll take a while. Over the last few months I scanned all of the remaining volumes. That’s Gintama volume 46 to 70. Which took a LONG time because I had to find time to do it among everything else (job, all these other projects, various social and other life obligations) and I’ve basically had to do every step of this volume on my own. A couple people volunteered but haven’t had time to do all that much, which is what it is. It’s a lot of boring work just to make an existing thing we already released higher quality, so I don’t really expect many people to jump at the chance to do that. But now that we got them all scanned and we’re in the process of running all the automations on them, all that’s left now is to manually clean and redraw… about 4600 pages. Which is gonna take a long time, and it’s pretty mind-numbing after you do it for a few hours so you can’t just marathon through all of that. If I did it all in a row every day I could probably finish it all in a 3 months or something. And while that would be nice to get it all done quickly, it’s probably not good for my physical or mental health so my plan now is to just do these every once in a while. Like maybe once a month or something. But I figure now that we’ve got everything at this stage I can eventually finish it, or maybe occasionally get people to volunteer to work on it because the first stages of everything (physically buying, scanning, and running a bunch of processes one pages one chapter at a time) are now all done. Like we could just white out all the bubbles and then it would be at least kinda-sorta in a releasable state. Just it wouldn’t have the redraws done, the edges of the pages fixed to look normal, the extras added just for the volumes, the inline sound effects, and any mistakes fixed or changes made from the magazine to the volumes added. So maybe later down the line I just skip some of those parts and release it just so it gets released in some form, I dunno. This series is huge, man. If we just did all that we’d have done volumes 33 to 77, that’s 45 volumes of one series. Anyway, we’ll see how that goes. I’ll let you all know as we get it done. And it has all the Q&As and such from Sorachi-sensei which I translated just for these. And some fonts are updated to look nicer. The text is largely the same otherwise though a handful of lines were revised or improved or fixed. I finally finished scanning alllll the volumes of Gintama we've only done physical Shounen Jump releases for. Which is something like 4800 pages. About 5 year's worth. Now for the long, mind-numbing process of cleaning and redrawing them all. (I hope maybe to finish this someday)

This chapter romanizes Howler’s first name as “Hacca” so we’re going to spell it like that now I guess. Also a bunch of other stuff happens with the various Stands and their respective users attacking each other. Also I’m trying out using a new reader site MangaTaro and see how that goes. I’m trying to move our stuff over there too as another backup reader. But it takes a while cause we have to do every single chapter and there’s like 2000+ of those. I might do a little at a time

Managing Director Shima Kōsaku Volume 4
The cover of Managing Director Shima Kousaku Volume 4 And here we are at volume 4. Believe it or not we’re half way done with Managing Director now. This volume is mainly about the changing landscape of Japan’s business in China and how China is/was changing as a country as it develops over the course of the 2000’s. We’re into mid-2003 at this point in the story. Also there’s some sword fights and kissing. And it’s also the first appearance of Kōtarō! So lots of stuff going on in this one. I really like how this series sort of gives you a snapshot of a specific era and what folks were thinking about the future at that point. You feel like you’re seeing what actual people thought at the time and their worries about the future and looking back on it 20 years after the fact now you can see how it played out. Various cultural dynamics changing too. I finished like 4 chapters in a day in this volume for some of the easier ones in the middle and it makes me wonder sometimes if I should just try to marathon through this series rather than doing one volume every month or two. But given how long the series is, we still wouldn’t be caught up even if I did a chapter a day for two years. Outside Director volume 7 came out a couple weeks ago and that’s the equivalent of volume 90 of the series as a whole (not counting the prequels or the sorta-canon spinoffs) and this one we’re releasing now is the equivalent of volume 34. And there’s enough magazine chapters for 2 more volumes already and it’s still going. But I dunno I’m gonna play it by ear and just try to do this when I feel like it and maybe I’ll get a lot done. It’s a fun series to translate once you know what all the subject matter is and you’re not spending a whole bunch of time looking up business terms and such to make sure you’re interpreting it right. If I finished 4 chapters a day every day I’d get all the way caught up in about 4 months. Anyhow I’m probably not gonna do that, but it’s just something I’ve been thinking about since we’ve been working on this series for 4 years now. Also I finished the first few chapters of volume 5 while I was waiting for folks to cleand then check this volume, so hope fully that one won’t take too long from now. Anyhow, Jojo comes out soon and I’m still scanning the rest of those Gintama volumes. There haven’t been any other 3-Gatsu no Lion chapters announced so far either. So anyhow see ya later!
