Richard Nixon created a Rural Affairs Council, he created a Task Force on Rural Development, and he passed a Rural Development Act. He also got a larger proportion of the rural vote than any other president in the postwar period. Rural economic interests in action.

In the second half of the twentieth century, rural and small town America basically built an entirely new economy within the crater created by the massive decline of agricultural employment.

Iran, Venezuela, Greenland. Like how many countries are we actively attacking right now? I can’t keep track.

In some ways I’m almost optimistic about the future of American politics. I think the Trump Administrations overreach and economic failures, along with the fecklessness of the Democratic neoliberal establishment, is creating an opening for a significant political realignment.

I would like to reiterate that the economy is already in the toilet and the AI bubble still has yet to burst.

Can scholars have midlife crises? Because all the sudden I’m way too obsessed with the War of 1812.

If this happened in a different country the headlines would read “right wing security services murder single mother in broad daylight”

People love to invoke the horseshoe theory of politics but leftists had a massive falling out with Biden and the Dems over Gaza because they actually believe in things where as right wingers immediately abandoned non interventionism for regime change because The Leader said so

After WWII, the Solid Democratic South dissolved into three distinct political zones: Mountains, metropolitan, and Black Belt. Mountains came to behave like all rural America, and metro South came to resemble all metro America. The Black Belt is the one truly distinctive zone

The historiography on the 1990s is utterly fascinating because it is dominated by two polar opposite narratives. It is either the dawn of polarization and an era of partisan fury. Or it is the age of neoliberal consensus when there was no difference between Dems and Reps.

Oh wow. Jimmy Carter was named Young Businessman of the year in 1970. Almost like he wasn’t really a peanut farmer but a small town business leader whose centrist political ideology was formed by his booster background. Someone should write about this
December 17, 2025 at 4:54 PM
Oh Jimmy Carter was the head of an economic development corporation while a small town businessman in Plains, Georgia? You don’t say.

Basically every poll known to man has shown for the last fifty years or so that voters think Republicans are stronger on the economy. This is a fundamental reality that Democrats have to reckon with.

The Populist’s Omaha Platform nailed it in 1892 and has only become more true since: “The fruits and toil of millions are boldly stolen to build up colossal fortunes for a few, unprecedented in the history of mankind; and the possessors of those, in turn, despise the republic and endanger liberty.”
