Stone circles are compelling places, and a visit earlier this week to the Strichen stone circle in NE Scotland sent the mind spinning about the people from the earliest times who once stood on this very spot. What were they like and how did they live?

A drake eider on a sea wall at Peterhead earlier this week sheltering from stormy winds and sleet showers. When will we see the sun again?

There was a fascinating array of marine life at Largo Bay in #Fife yesterday washed up by recent storms, including this stunning sand star
February 2, 2026 at 6:56 PM
Recent storms had washed this ocean quahog onto the beach at Largo Bay today. They are among our longest-lived animals, and this beauty, given its large size, could possibly be between 100 to 200 years old. The maximum recorded age is over 500 years old!

A striking flourish of hazel catkins in Tentsmuir Forest in #Fife. Delightfully known as lamb’s tails, these catkins are the male flowers, each one containing millions of pollen grains that will be scattered by the wind like invisible dust

A visit to a dreich Tentsmuir Forest in #Fife yesterday brought a close encounter with this fabulous great spotted woodpecker

Nice to find my first scarlet elf cups of the year by the banks of the River Devon. Also known as ‘fairies baths’, folklore has it that wood elves and fairies drank morning dew from the cup

Great to see drake goldeneyes courting the females on Birnie Loch in Fife this morning.

This yellow brain fungus by the bankside of the River Devon this morning was a real eye-catcher. Also known as witches’ butter, according to folklore, if it appeared on the gate or door of a house it meant that a witch had cast a spell on the family living there

Our smallest bird, and constantly on the move, the goldcrest is mighty tricky to snap, but I struck lucky with this wee gem in my local wood by keeping my finger pressed down on the camera shutter button and hoping for the best!

Here is a great example of how beavers benefit biodiversity. This side-channel they have created by the River Devon has attracted a stunning snipe to feed – a declining species, classed as a bird of conservation concern
