A first-aider from the Neasham Road supermarket in Darlington has been hailed as a "guardian angel" for her swift actions in helping a young customer who collapsed in the store’s car park. Jo, a trained first-aider and member of the store’s team, was on duty when a couple in their 20s left the supermarket. Officers investigating a report of hate crime have released images of a man they would like to identify. At 10pm on Friday, November 8, 2024, police received a report of hate crime at South Shields Metro interchange on Keppel Street. It was reported that a man, believed to be intoxicated, was asked to leave the Metro station by a member of staff.

(C) Northumbria Police A rapist has been jailed for 12 years after being found guilty of offences committed more than a decade ago. Christopher Sams, 34, repeatedly targeted his young victim over the course of a six-year period. The victim bravely reported the abuse in 2021, after which officers in Northumbria Police’s Safeguarding Department immediately launched an investigation. Sams, of Kenton Road, North Shields, was swiftly arrested and denied all offences.

(C) Middlesbrough Council A run-down roadside planter has been given a new lease of life with help from a Middlesbrough Councillor and a green-fingered pal. The stone-built structure near St Joseph’s Church on the town’s Marton Road had fallen into disrepair with loose blocks and dead plants making for a less than pretty sight. Longlands & Beechwood ward Councillor Joan McTigue put in a request to the Council’s Neighbourhood service for the planter to be restored, with the work completed last week.

Officers investigating a collision in Newcastle that left a woman with serious injuries are appealing for witnesses to come forward. Shortly after 1am on Thursday, January 2, police received reports of a two-vehicle collision on the A1 northbound, next to the Kingston Park turn off. It was reported that a blue Range Rover had collided with a grey Mercedes A-Class.
