i often see schools insisting that marginalised children speak ‘formally’ in ‘standard English’ because of ‘high expectations’. but this is just another example of schools having low expectations of what nondominant language styles can do and the linguistic innovativeness of marginalised children.

there is no empirical relationship between a teacher's accent and their ability to teach. but there is a long-standing ideological relationship which frames non-dominant and non-standardised accents as signs of imagined pedagogical illegitimacy.

Late one last night with the Young Leaders planning our event at the National Coal Mining Museum. Every time I meet them, their drive, vision, and spirit of inquiry, (and of course their wit cos they're from Barnsley) gives me hope and the will to keep going and keep researching ✊
