A nonprofit wanted to privately fund a facility that would house veterans struggling with housing. North Las Vegas officials said the lot — which has sat empty for years — needed to be reserved for commercial space.

I recently visited a cosmetology class at Florence McClure Correctional Center, which offers a program designed to give inmates a cosmetology license and viable career path, reducing recidivism. Normally, this course would cost someone tens of thousands. Many women told me it’s a huge blessing.
My favorite part of this story by @estelleatkinson.bsky.social: “According to Braimoh, out of the approximately 85 women who have received their cosmetology licenses through the program, only one or two have ever returned to Florence McClure.”
