Anyone have suggestions for good introductory readings (for 1st year students) on AI and LLMs? I'm particularly interested in readings explaining how an LLM works and/or how using the term "artificial intelligence" for LLMs is a misnomer.

Everyone always proposes this as the answer without understanding that an oral exam requires very different skills than a closely argued research-driven essay. If you want to argue those skills don’t matter, then fine, argue that, but don’t pretend that oral argumentation is identical.

This “trap” is often what admin wants. They put the onus onto individual instructors, tell them it’s their responsibility to meet the student/handle the situation, and they refuse to offer clear guidance/support. Then admin is insulated from blowback & the instructor bears the burden.
This is a terrible story--both because of the trap that was set (either in advance or ret-conned to seize a moment) for this graduate student but also because the student's department failed her. The 1st problem is easy to see, but I want to explain the 2nd one. 1/x
btw, every "reasonable" person who's own posting stuff like "well, the prompt was unclear," or "she actually kind of did the assignment OK so maybe the TA overreacted"--you are also part of the problem! You're laundering the deliberate targeting of a TA and a blatant abrogation of academic freedom!

This thread is 💯. Labor precarity in academia means the evisceration of faculty governance and academic freedom, opening the door to administrative purges of the most vulnerable. And faculty-esp tenured faculty and academic leaders-who aren't defending their trans colleagues are enabling it.

Dumb question for acas. (Sorry, I’m clueless.) I have a manuscript that needs a proofread & proper citations. Can I pay an editor to help w/both? I don’t need them to fix typos, but I need another set of eyes & would love help entering the citations from Zotero. Is this a thing? Is it expensive?

HBO Max is trying an m/m hockey romance based on the Rachel Reid books, which is fascinating to me on about 50 different levels. Does this mean USA media companies are testing m/m? Will this be like the original L Word & try to serve/attract multiple audiences simultaneously? So many questions!!

Breaking News: Cornell University reached an agreement with the Trump administration that would restore hundreds of millions in funding to the university. It's expected to pay a $30 million fine to the government and to invest $30 million in agriculture and farming programs.
