Callow hearts, hollow bones is a historical dark urban fantasy (I think it's fair to say) comic.

It follows Joseph Crow (he/she) – hunter, lover, fighter, joker – and I've posted the prologue before here on bs without context. I'm going to provide some context and repost the 26 pages 🪶

#Drawtober2025 Day 31: Recollection #TATWSpoilers

Happy Halloween everyone!
Ending off this month with the same way I started: Drawing fan art of #TraitorandtheWretch!

One of the scenes that I keep coming back to where these two finally get a moment to just see each other, in more ways than one.
Knell and Percy sit in a hot spring surrounded by stalactites/stalagmites. Knell is an emaciated man covered in scars, with an especially large one on his chest. He sits hunched over, knuckle tapping against his head. His other hand grips his knee, sharp nails digging into his skin, hard enough to draw blood. He says with a frantic grin, “It’s a bit muddled up there.” Percy sits a ways away, with concerned expression, eyes focusing on where Knell is gripping his knee. In the water lights them up from below through tiny luminescent fish swimming in swirling schools.

From my current WIP, a grim fantasy with a not-so-grim romance about two bad guys dungeon crawling their way to a happier ending, Percy, the big brute, is demi-sexual and grey-romantic. He was not ready to meet his soulmate in the form of this greasy rat man he found in a ditch.

This is extremely accurate, and it's why I wish editors got a credit on books. Sometimes you learn who edited a bunch of your favorite books and you're like ah. I see. It's a job that requires a keen literary eye AND people skills, which is a tough mix!

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

Not only have editors prevented me from showing my ass in public, so has hiring sensitivity readers. I’m a big fan of both. Having someone be honest with you while also keeping your best interests at heart is something to be valued not dismissed
