@maddow.msnbc.com About 100 people attended a funeral in Gainesville, GA this past Friday. The funeral was for the Social Security office there. Small town, small numbers; nevertheless a statement was made. So many in this semi-rural area will be affected by the DOGE decision to close the office.

The frigid, snowy weather that has gripped the south brings to mind times past when my family used gas heat. We gathered around the heater in the middle of the house, or the oven in the kitchen to stay warm. We played games, read books, ate a lot of soup, and stayed wrapped up in blankets.

I want conversations to develop on Blue Sky other than about politics. Don’t get me wrong. I want to be in the loop on politics, but if I’m going to leave Facebook, and encourage others to join me, I need for this space to be more personal. Like it snowed here, and now it’s melting, and I’m sad.

Today is Plough Monday. In agricultural areas this marked the return to work after Christmas.

A decorated plough was traditionally dragged through the streets, visiting houses to invite donations.

Records date back to the 15th century. The picture is a 19th century example.

I was reading in a group post this morning and came across this phrase - “kilt lettuce.” That was new to me. It turns out that it means wilted lettuce, which I’m pretty sure is a Southern US dish. You drip hot bacon grease over lettuce or spinach with other salad ingredients and enjoy. Delicious!
