I freaking did it!! I submitted my graduate portfolio!

40 months ago I started my Master’s of Library and Information Science at Syracuse University.

Pregnancy, newborn, working full time, moving across country . . . I kept at it one class at a time.

But soon I’ll officially be Kate Thomas, MLIS!
Reading is so important to a child’s development!

I am prepping for my daughter’s 3 year old wellness check and on the “Survey of Well-being” it asks how many days do you or a family member read to your child.

Take your kiddos to the library and get a few (or a bag full of) books every week!

We currently have 10+ library books in our house just for my toddler that are ready for return and then we get to find new ones to check out!

I also love that our library includes how much you saved by using the library vs buying books on your checkout receipt!

Latest checkout from my local library . . . I’ve got 6 hours in a car over the course of the weekend. I think this book will be good company.

Stories behind tattoos are one of my favorite conversations with people. Serious or silly, I wanna hear them all.
Plot twist! The real reason librarians wear cardigans 😂📚

Video description:
“Having tattoos doesn’t make you unprofessional” by Heb plays. Mychal shows his reader’s advisory tattoo arm. Tattoos include Frog and Toad, Studio Ghibli, Where the Wild Things Are, Arthur Read, Grover, Strega Nona & more.

How do I know I’m doing a decent job at parenting??

We pull up to the library and without me telling my almost 3 year old where we are she screams “Yaaaaaaay books!”

Thinking about all the CA fire evacuation families . . . Many times Red Cross shelters can’t allow pets to join families.

My old man and I are sending you butt wiggles and hugs!

BREAKING: Thrice-accused rapist Bowen Turner of Orangeburg, South Carolina will remain a registered sex offender, the SC Court of Appeals ruled today.
Turner was released from prison in Nov.

We are still waiting to hear back on survivor Chloe Bess’ appeal — which could be HUGE for victims’ rights.

Can confirm movers sigh HUGELY when they see our books every time we’ve moved.
It's all great having a ton of books until you have to move. #booksky

The hardest part of ILL requests is . . . PATIENCE!! (For me, at least).

We’re so use to instant gratification, that having to wait for a book to arrive can be hard.

But trust me, it’s worth it!!

I just did an ILL request for some books for my toddler last week. 📚📚
Can you imagine a world where 99 percent of the books you want to read are available even if your library does not have them?

That world already exists with Inter-Library Loan!

My reading goal for 2025 is 50 books!

All my excuses from 2024 are done and over.

Currently reading “The Book of Accidents” by Chuck Wendig.

Sub-goal: read 1 book from my library’s “Hot Reads” shelf each month. I very much enjoyed “How to Solve Your Own Murder” by Kristen Perrin.

I love being a mom, but I miss the days where I could be lazy and just read all day. My TBR list keeps getting longer and longer.

But when your toddlers runs up to you, all excited to show you something they learned or something they drew . . . the books can wait for now.

Please don’t ban books!!

The library’s purpose is to provide a wide range of information to EVERYONE!!

As a parent, it is MY responsibility to decide what books are appropriate for my child.

Do y'all know that when you search Google you can limit your search results to a specific domain by adding site: and then the domain to the end of your search terms? Examples:

Continuing resolution site:washingtonpost.com
Distance education site:edu
Planets site:nasa.gov

I love winter solstice!! Each day after the solstice, we get one minute more of sunlight and those minutes add up. Winter Solstice symbolizes the promise that better things (summer / sunlight / warmth) are on the way and it only gets better from here!

I’m taking a SEO course (because why would I give myself a break after my Master’s portfolio??) and the instructor likened SEO work to cataloging for a librarian.

That’s why SEO makes so much sense to me!

Reading should be a joy and not a chore. If you're not in the mood or can't find just the right book, it's okay to take a break. I've never been a constant reader. We all have our own unique relationship with books. And, books are always there when you're ready for them.
