This is very unfortunate timing as it coincides with the @balticstudies.bsky.social bi-annual conference at UIUC, so don't expect many proposals from Baltic scholars.

I certainly don't have full confidence that the Western European leaders won't fall for empty US promises of security guarantees and lean on Zelenskyy to accept.

We have already found out the answer months ago.

That recalls the "Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, when Moscow cut a deal to divvy up an Eastern European country with a Western ex-democracy that backslid into fascism under a convicted criminal with a cult of personality."
Donald Trump holding a "peace summit" with Vladimir Putin in Alaska this week makes no sense, for the should-be-obvious reason that the United States and Russia are not at war.

He can't trade away Ukraine's territory, even if he wanted to.

So what are they up to?

My latest, in @thebulwark.com:
The Real Reason for the Alaska Summit
It’s sure not because Trump cares about the suffering of the Ukrainian people.

What impressed @markhertling.bsky.social the most while visiting each Baltic state wasn’t that their governments are clear-eyed and proactive, but that the ordinary citizens were, too...they harbor no illusions about the threats...they are not merely reacting to danger, but preparing for it—together
We in the United States—and across the broader alliance—would do well to study the Baltics. If American leadership in NATO is waning (and it shouldn’t), I hope we reconsider and instead emulate the strategic vision and courage of those in the Baltics.
