A small piece of good news in #publichealth today: in addition to malaria vaccines for kids age 5 month+, we now have malaria TREATMENT for babies!

(Of course, we also have to pay for the treatment & make it accessible. But I will take any joy I can find.)

First malaria treatment for newborn babies approved for use
Malaria caused 597,000 deaths worldwide in 2023, with children under 5 accounting for 76 percent of all malaria deaths in the World Health Organization’s Africa region.

1/27 We have a new paper out! Turns out that snowflake yeast have been hiding a secret from us - they've evolved a (very!) crude circulatory system. Not with blood vessels or a heart, but through spontaneous fluid flows powered by their metabolism. 🧪🔬

Obligatory intro post as a Bluesky newbie! 👋 Here’s a recent pic of my lab at UCLA — we’re a fun, curious crew studying antimicrobial resistance and the hidden structures of microbial RNA to fight infectious diseases (especially TB).

Follow along for science, stories, and snapshots from the lab! 🧬🧫
