I made teaching tools for training people on the SNOUTY.
Here they are for other people! I recommend laminating them so you can draw on them with dry erase markers :)

@tanner-fadero.bsky.social told me there was a discussion about the unofficial name for #snouty V3. We have had Mr. Snouty and King Snouty, and there were people suggesting Emperor Snouty. I think it is time for a Lady or EMPRESS snouty. I have created Art to support this.

This was a quick sketch for the super kind postdoc Lisa Randolf who has kindly been providing me with samples to test on our microscope.

Congratulations to Takeshi Tsusaka on their recent publication on Reversible histone deacetylase activity www.nature.com/articles/s41....

Also, thank you to Takeshi for acknowledging our core facility, putting in hardware information about the microscope, and telling me about it all!!!!

Microscopes are Analog to Digital devices!

I drew this for teaching purposes.

Slow-mo Calcium response!
Here is a little neutrophil with a calcium sensor doing its best to respond to a chemoattractant!

Work done by Evelyn Strickland inspired this! Check out her paper on self-extinguishing relay waves in neutrophil swarming

Decorated pumpkins at work! I had to go with a Vampire microscope because microscopes are light vampires.

Bonus for anyone who noticed its deadly ultraviolet wings!

Magnification is not resolution!
Resolution is the minimum distance required to distinguish between two objects. You need to take into account how light spreads and refraction. Magnification just makes things bigger.
I drew this for a workshop I’m helping to teach!

I’m behind on challenges because I guess it was Smaugust, for some reason I thought there was a Smaugtember with all the dragon images on my feed.
Anyway it made me want to draw a dragon and I just like the idea of a giant powerful dragon performing delicate work.

Superstition is abound in the lab, so here is a bit of science humor with another little cartoon I drew on the train.

Turns out I can’t help but draw microscopes on things. This ended up being an exercise in transposition to draw a microscope on this little marmal toy. I feels like a little puzzle that I will need to work on.

I found a new toy that you are supposed to draw on and wash off called a marmal (@lovemarmals)

The first order of business was giving it a brain, which led to imagining what its nervous system would look like. It turned out a little bit like a supervillain.

If you want to read more about the science for how Kirsten Meyer used optogenetics to study the effects of YAP proteins in stem cells, check out her paper here www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles...
Optogenetic control of YAP reveals a dynamic communication code for stem cell fate and proliferation
YAP is a transcriptional regulator that controls pluripotency, cell fate, and proliferation. How cells ensure the selective activation of YAP effector genes is unknown. This knowledge is essential to ...
