Does anyone else see the irony of the rapid growth in burning fossil fuels to power AI for AGI increases the likelihood of both climate collapse and AI takeover dystopian futures? Kind of a symbiotic death spiral.

It's time for the GHG Protocol rules to specify that all firms report their actual, location-based Scope 1/2 emissions without all the accounting games. Consumers, investors and employees deserve the truth. Thanks to the Guardian for some great reporting.

Data center emissions likely 662% higher than big tech claims. Can it keep up the ruse?
Emissions from in-house data centers of Google, Microsoft, Meta and Apple may be 7.62 times higher than official figures

Note to @Schneider Electric - we're years away from enough green energy to address the rapidly growing power demand of all the new data centers being built, and the natural gas grid providers are already sounding the alarm on their capacity. This is not a reasonable stopgap.

More consolidation in the energy sector driven by growing data center power demand. Hopefully this will spur more geothermal development, but we'll mostly likely see a jump in natural gas generators in the near term. Sigh.

On the other hand, the whole point of increased power and liquid cooling is to pack the racks at much greater density of CPUs and GPUs. Ultimately new cloud regions will still see a big jump in power and water demand. We have a long way to go to net zero

I have mixed feelings about this announcement from AWS. On the one hand they are putting tremendous effort into improving the power and cooling efficiency of their data centers and embracing lower emission concrete and biodiesel for backup generators press.aboutamazon.com/2024/12/aws-...

Data centers have maxed out the grid in Ireland. According the Journal, over 135,000 tons of CO2 was emitted from data centers in the last five years from generators not on the electricity grid. That's roughly 33,750 cars for a year.

Coming soon to an area near you.
