“The postwar order rested on three pillars: American hegemony, the fossil-fuel energy system, and an open, multilateral trading order. America has now attacked each pillar at the foundation of its hydrocarbon global order.” —

France could raise around €20 billion per year from this tax

That’s half of the €40B the government is looking for this year

Globally? $302–377 billion could be raised—every year

From the ultra-rich. Who currently pay very little.

This @washingtonpost.com visual sums it up: tax cuts (that go disproportionately to the richest) paid for in large part by cutting health care and food for millions of Americans, and adding to the national debt.

Here’s a crazy fact for you: Spain and Germany have now seen basically the exact same amount of economic growth post-2008. Would have been unthinkable to people during most of the 2010s. Spain has seen ~10 percentage points more cumulative growth since 2017.

We’re going to hear lots of stories about which people, policies and rhetoric are to blame for the Democrats’ defeat.

Some of those stories may even be true!

But an underrated factor is that 2024 was an absolutely horrendous year for incumbents around the world 👇

I have written an Expecting Goals newsletter about the 2024 election, this is a thread with a few of my findings

1) there is a clear swing state vs non-competitive state effect where Harris ran about four points stronger in states where she campaigned
