Overeducated PhD dropout, high school teacher of students not stuff, parent of adults, cat herder, lover of pockets. she/them
In Book Club class this week, we studied three essays not written in this century:
* Jonathan Swift's "A Modest Proposal"
* E. Pauline Johnson's "A Strong Race Opinion: On the Indian Girl in Modern Fiction"
* Martin Luther King Jr.'s "Letter from a Birmingham Jail"

The conversations were so good.

I'm really missing the educator community I was part of at the other place. I've been thinking about that a lot in the last little bit.

Any other human barometers really feeling it today?

Happy Janet Jackson Appreciation Day for all who celebrate.

So... is Vance's "flow of drugs" from Canada to the US all the prescription drugs that USians cross the border to buy because they're outrageously expensive at home?

Provincial election on the way?
I just scooted over to @civixcanada.bsky.social site & signed up my school for Student Vote.
We'll have lots of info sessions over the next month so they feel prepared to vote next month.
If you have students who are/will be 18+, what are you doing to get them ready?

It’s okay to be annoyed when people’s expectations of your time are entirely unreasonable.

Even when they’re teenagers who aren’t yours.
January 24, 2025 at 11:15 PM
The level of stress teens are feeling this week as they navigate exams & finalize culminating tasks is off the charts.

Take time. Check in with them. Determine what they need. Be open to offering needed supports EVEN IF they don’t have an IEP. Let them know you’re here to support them through this.

Cookies for supper is sometimes essential.

I am total garbage at writing exams.
2. If you went college, what did you realize by time you were a senior you wish you knew as a freshman?

I was really hoping I’d ordered fast enough for a pink background, but the blue is still wonderful. I still need to get it framed, but that’s not a today job. Artist: Blake Angeconeb.

I took some students to Toronto Archives today, and it was such a great experience. If you teach history, check out your local archive to see if they do tours and educational programming. Being able to engage with history in a hands-on way is such a gift.

I made it through my first day back after medical leave. My students and colleagues are lovely as ever, and I am fall-down tired. I managed to make supper, and that's as far as I'm getting tonight.

Whew.

One of my four student loans is finally under $3000!

(we won't discuss the others. that way lies sadness.)

I just realized a couple of weeks ago that I can access some live tv channels through my tv.
I mentioned to my 22yo this afternoon that I was watching one of her favourite movies.
"That's ... great. I can just stream it whenever I want without commercials, though, so no thanks!"

I have somehow watched significant chunks of five Hannukah movies today. They are of varying quality, with a total paucity of queer people. Also, there's an awful lot of Christmas in many of them. Not all, but enough to note.
December 29, 2024 at 11:47 PM
I go back to work in a week, after being on medical leave for the last month.
Tonight/tomorrow starts the rejigging of my sleep schedule: aim to be asleep by 11, alarm set for 8.
In a couple of days, I'll shift to 10/7, and then, ideally, 9/6 so I'm back on track.

If you were my knitting needles, where might you be currently hiding in my house?
December 29, 2024 at 6:45 PM
Happy Hannukah to me.
December 28, 2024 at 8:06 PM
Among other items, my love gave me books for Hannukah.
The good news is he clearly knows and understands how my brain works, based on his choices!
The less good news is that because he knows me so well, 3/4 of the books are already on my shelves. 😂

Is there a sensory-friendly moisturizer that won't make me want to chop off my hands after using it to get away from the lotion feeling?
December 25, 2024 at 1:34 AM
Gentle reminder that there is no such thing as a publicly funded "secular" k12 education system.
