There have been some busy bees 🍯in the department!

Judith van der Knaap and colleagues published a paper in Ecosystems about the contribution of drainage ditches to greenhouse gas emissions in drained peatlands here in the Netherlands.

Disproportionately High Contribution of Ditches to Landscape Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Drained Peatlands - Ecosystems
Drained peatlands are a significant source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions; however, research has predominantly focused on terrestrial areas, with much less attention given to drainage ditches. Desp...

🌍💧💨 Small ditches, large impact!

Published my first PhD chapter in Ecosystems. Ditches in drained peatlands emit far more GHG than their small surface area might suggest. Accounting for them is crucial for accurate national inventories.

Ons artikel “Lines in the Landscape” is uit! Een artikel over de vaak ondergewaardeerde rol van sloten in onze landschappen. Van inspirerende gesprekken op een ‘ditch workshop’ tot dit mooie perspective paper.

I'm thrilled to see this paper out, which I co-led with @ditchontologist.bsky.social, and featuring input from loads of excellent co-authors. It's our interdisciplinary perspective on ditches; what they do, why they matter, and how we should look after them.
