RIP Tony Harrison

Met him at a poetry festival in Medellin, Colombia in 1994 (when tourists were mostly too afraid to visit the country)

I could only think to ask ‘what are you doing here?’ To which he replied, ‘what are *you* doing here?’

Lovely man

fun cover/title belies twisted darkness within, by Christian Kracht. Far from the lite fare I was seeking — but still brilliant

We've just produced an ebook edition of The Good Soldier with an introduction to the turbulent life of Ford Madox Ford, and the magnificent story he told. The saddest story. It's a wonderful book. It might change your reading life. And you can get it for £1.89

Word of the Day is ‘uhtcearu’ [ucht-kay-aru, with the 'ch' as in the Scottish ‘loch']:

Old English for ‘the sorrow before dawn', when you lie awake in the darkness and worries crowd your mind.
