Generic Gen-X Nerd.

I do post here, but it's very much a subset of my posts to Mastodon, as I have zero confidence in VC-backed corporate social media.

Merry Christmas (you filthy animals).

I decided to move furniture around my office a bit, and I have (a) some happiness, and (b) some regrets.

“I never see you at the club” yeah well, I never see you at the Frontier, defending it from Xur and the Kodan armada.

Happy birthday, Mum. I miss you.

I keep getting ads for Pink Floyd albums on one of the shitty billionaire controlled social media platforms[1], and it’s not advertising money well spent.

As is the case with many people around my age, I am already quite familiar with Wish You Were Here.

I could just get an ex-corpo ex-lease Thinkpad, and run Linux on it.

It wouldn't be as fast as an M-series MacBook, but it would definitely be cheaper, and I bet I could expand the ram and disk easily.

And, most importantly, I wouldn't have to experience the current macOS liquid glass UI.

If the current NZ government does copy the Australian goverment and legislate a ban on social media access for under 16 year olds, then I will take great personal delight in assisting my under-16yo child in defeating that ban. Dumb laws are dumb.

Okay. Let's give macOS Tahoe another go on my non main mac. Last time I did this I hated the 26.0 UI visuals so much that I rolled it back to Sequoia.

I am told that the new one has affordances to tone liquid glass down, which goddamn hell ass cripes did it need, so let's see what 26.2 is like.

Is that Lobo in the Supergirl trailer? Huh. I think it is.

Man, while the future mostly sucks, the comic book fan version of me from the late 20th century is eatin’ GOOD here in the world of tomorrow.

Me: [0100hrs] [Some brain neurons go Bzzt] I think I will rebuild my entire home network, the cluster that hosts my VMs, and the backup system.

Me: [0617hrs] [Finishing the last test of the now rebuilt tech stack] Yes. Good. Yes.

Me: [0620hrs] [Realising I have stuff to do today] Oh no.

[Runs onto stage, puts mouth too close to the mic] Who called it 'Trump Thought' when 'Orange Juche' was right there waiting.

I think the glasshole will be amazed at how many people who know that woman do not, in fact, recognise her.

I think the only Tom Stoppard work I am actually familiar with is Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, but I must say that Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead is an ABSOLUTE BANGER.

R.I.P.

[Warning: Nerdy World of Warcraft stuff]

Right. I feel like that's Legion: Remix put to bed. Relaxing a bit until they release Midnight next year.

I gave away my Quest headset when I deleted my Facebook account (because Nazis) but I miss VR stuff, so I am quite pleased by the prospect of the recently announced cheap Valve headset. I hope it's reasonably priced.

I put a lowball bid on an Eames Lounge Chair with a broken swivel base, with a view to putting it in my project car as the drivers seat. I was outbid, sadly. Probably for the best, not sure what @annettle.bsky.social would have said.

Never doubt my commitment to the bit.

If there's an equivalent to bad for you but more-ish junk food for a certain kind of avid reader[1], it's endless LitRPG books with titles like The Arcane Rogue Reborn - Book 3 - Rune Sigil Ascension. (A sequel to The Arcane Rogue Reborn - Rune Sigil Progression)

The NCIS character Ziva is canonically an Israeli soldier, which these days reduces the appeal of her spinoff show into the negative.

"Tonight on NCIS: Tony and Ziva! Uh-oh! Tony's dry cleaner has lost his favourite shirt! Meanwhile Ziva gut-shoots a 5yo because they were '...probably Hamas'."

Is it churlish to point out that whatever broke in your work/life flow today, due to Amazon breaking us-east-1, is also a solid subset of what the US government could take from you (or simply monitor for badthink) due to (just as an example) that government being run by nazis?

My first car was a late 60’s Mini, and every so often I get nostalgic enough to look at buying another one. But. I walked past one parked on our street recently and … damn, they are small. I don’t think I could fit in a classic mini any more. In fact, it’s possible that I could wear one as a hat.

I’ve been feeling quite a lot less crap recently, and so over the last couple of days I’ve had the spoons to do a bunch of work on various computers around the house, and I don’t know if they are _fixed_ but they are definitely _different_.

I can't find my multimeter, despite invoking the ancient magics to locate it, by which I mean wandering around the house muttering "Multimeter, multimeter, multimeter..."
