Going to Costco on Saturday is like visiting Times Square, except everyone has oversized carts full of 19 watermelons and is standing around waiting for their chicken bake number to be called.

Gene Harris is so damn underrated outside of jazz circles.

If you have the courage to go on stage and share a song you wrote then I’m proud of you and honored to hear it.

No matter what the audience felt, or how well you executed it. You had something to say, and you said it. And that’s enough for me.

The lengths I go to for a music theory video sometimes…

I hung a camera on a gimbal from the ceiling on a rope and made this faux drone shot over my piano.

I think it’s dope.

I don’t know how I made it through jazz school without being told Ornithology is the study of birds, and also a tune by Charlie “Bird” Parker.

I absolutely love BlueSky, but almost none of my audience has found me here… even with promotion.

They are still over in that other place.

Anyone had success getting their audience moved over? Would love some advice.

Just had a final workshop with a small jazz 🎹 group working on Groovin’ High, and every one of them nailed the play through at the end. This was quite a challenge for many of them.

I’m so flipping proud!

I tried something new on the channel this week. A look inside Jon Batiste's performance at the Superbowl from my perspective as a jazz pianist.

Feeling kind of defeated today.

Coming off the high of some great content recently, but spent 2 weeks running face first into a brick wall for the next video.

I think I gotta set the Pure Imagination video aside until I can get a few things right.

Ladybird, as played by the great Barry Harris has some really great movements using his 6th on the 5th, 6th diminished and "brothers and sisters" chords.

I've just wrapped up this weeks transcription, which goes out to over 5,000 musicians by email tomorrow.

My favorite recording of Georgia on my Mind is in the key of Ab... can you guess the artist? I can only think of one recording in that key.

Tomorrow at 1:00 Eastern we're starting a series in our Zoom #jazz workshops on this tune. It's free, just register below.

This week was the great Wayne Shorter solo on Free For All. You can grab it here, with my observations about the solo.

"Make content for people, not algorithms"

I have this posted 3 places in my studio / office and it's still something I struggle with every day.

Algorithms are powerful. I've spend the most time on platforms where the algorithms are designed to align with whats good for the user.

Every new jazz chord voicing has 96 permutations to master: 12 keys x 4 tonalities x A/B variations.

Even simple concepts become hard to execute with so many options.

It’s humbling to realize what’s easy to understand can be so hard to physically master.

This is about 1/5th of the jazz books I own.

But how much of them can I play fluently? 🤔
January 23, 2025 at 2:27 PM
Lately, I’ve been digging into the fundamentals, fixing anything I’m not 100% fluid in—like 6th diminished scales or blues in Ab. It’s so freeing once you really lock those in.
