The 2026 #CUSMA review is coming fast. Stakeholders are urging Canada to drop laws that hurt consumers and stifle innovation. Beyond #DST, Ottawa says repeal isn’t on the table, but the trade review is a second chance to fix Canada’s digital policy agenda news.bloombergtax.com/financial-ac...
US Tech Firms Urge End to Canada Tax Laws in Trade Deal Review
US tech companies said Monday the US government should pressure Canada and Mexico during a renegotiation of North America’s free trade deal to abandon tax laws that negatively affect them.

1/ I get why progressives distrust trade deals and negotiations. But a smart trade review of #CUSMA / #USMCA in 2026 could actually help cut costs for Canadians, at least on digital policy. If we’re serious about tackling affordability, we need to pay close attention. #cdnpoli

I always enjoy Tim's writing, but I don’t love the way his latest Globe piece downplays the real benefits. For example, estimates suggest that YouTube alone supports 28,000 FTEs in Canada. Hard to be flippant about the value there! www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/arti...

.@MarkJCarney wants Canada to be the best place in the world to invest. In tech, we’ve screwed it up before with protectionism that scared folks off. We can’t afford to mess it up again.

After big moves south of the border, guess who finally showed up to the crypto party?

Canada! With plans introduce #stablecoin legislation:

Now that the #Budget2025 hubbub has died down a bit, I still have one question:

Where in the world is the Digital Services Tax repeal? #DST #cdnpoli

1/ Tim is right that Canada’s affordability challenges stem in part from limited choice and competition across a range of sectors, but we should be thoughtful about how we respond. financialpost.com/technology/t...

Lost in Budget 2025 is that the government promised a data mobility right in PIPEDA. This comes at same time that AI Minister Evan Solomon has said he will lead on a new privacy bill in Canada. Is the privacy reform a new bill (as in C-27) or tweaks to PIPEDA?

ICYMI: Canada’s new digital sovereignty paper injects some sanity into the debate.

-Autonomy’s a myth. Sovereignty’s achievable
-Define what’s critical, encrypt it, stay open
-Hybrid > isolation

Canada’s new digital sovereignty paper cuts through the noise:

-True autonomy is impossible
-A homegrown tech stack won’t save us
-Define what’s critical. Encrypt it

Even “Canadian” clouds run on global code. The future is hybrid, secure, pragmatic.

Anxiety over the CLOUD Act is driving calls for sovereign cloud solutions across Canada. But a lot of the debate rests on misconceptions. This piece cuts through the noise and argues for a risk-based approach over crude geographic boundaries: www.osler.com/en/insights/...
Data sovereignty in light of the CLOUD Act: back to the future?
Ottawa and provincial governments across the country are facing demands for Canadians’ data to be protected — in part — from foreign access under a U.S. law known as the CLOUD Act.
