Chief Thody, Blue Santa and I handed out toys this morning in the pediatric unit at the Greater New Bedford Community Health Center. Many thanks to the staff there for providing children the care they need, even during the holidays.

The City’s Christmas Tree started its journey today from its home in the South End, and ended on the steps of the Main Library. It will be lighted officially on Saturday evening, December 6. Many thanks to the Brayton family for donating such a beautiful tree.

The point Rico the Green Aracari was making to me is that the @buttonwoodparkzoo’s new Animal Ambassador Pavilion, which opens to the public Saturday, will be one of the best animal engagement exhibits anywhere. Congrats to everyone who played a role in making it happen.

@capeair’s inaugural flight for its new regular service from #NewBedford Regional Airport to Boston was sent off in style by the NBFD. The service will enable passengers to reach connecting flights while avoiding Boston traffic and security lines and paying 75% less for parking.

The #CapeVerde islands recently experienced mudslides that destroyed thousands of homes. The Cape Verdean Association of New Bedford, the Verdean Vets, and others organized a relief effort today that blew away expectations. I’m proud to live in a city with so much generosity.

On August 20, 1925, one hundred years ago today, the last whaling vessel to return to port with oil, the John R. Manta, sailed into New Bedford with a load of 300 barrels, marking the end of the traditional high seas whaling industry in the United States.

Tonight with Bishop Samuel Green and Reverend Sandra Whitley we celebrated the 200th anniversary of the founding of #NewBedford’s Bethel AME church. Once a haven for former slaves and a beacon of abolitionism, the church continues to have an impact beyond its walls.

Today at the Vietnam Veterans Mem’l we marked the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War. New Bedford’s enduring message to Vietnam Vets is this: We appreciate your sacrifice then, and your efforts ever since to help America live up to its obligations to those who served.
