Are there any bird nerds out there who can point me to info on the genetic basis of leucism in birds (or in magpies or corvids specifically)? @davetoews.bsky.social

Head of a small chalcid wasp at scale of 50:1. On the left you can see part of the compound eye, on the right an ocelle and at the bottom right part of the antenna.

I guess I hadn't posted this yet and didn't even know it had come out-- I was interviewed for (and co-wrote w/Daniel Rabosky) a Trends in Ecology & Evolution "TrendsTalk" article on "Disability in ecology and evolution" -- www.cell.com/trends/ecolo... #DisabledInSTEM #academicchatter #academia

The tech bro fascination with eugenics is so on brand. The idea that you could make accurate, actionable predictions from individual genotypes (with all their complex, non-linear interactions) from averaged, linearly modeled population-level genomic statistics is just another big data fantasy

I have new pre-print. I think it's good (which is unusual for me - I typically don't think highly of my own work).

Anyway, if you're interested in thinking about genetic parallelism (or even if you're not), maybe you'll like it.

I'm handling my first manuscript as an Associate Editor.

I've sent >20 invitations over the past month and not a single person has agreed to review (most just ghost me).

Is this normal? Or is it because I'm a nobody with no name recognition and everyone assumes it's spam?

I did some science with some people. It was fun, but it sure took a long time, which made it nice that it was with good people. Also, I think it's good science.

As far as academic positions go, I think working at MRU is pretty great! You should apply!
We're hiring a community ecologist (assistant professor) here at MRU. I enjoy working here. Maybe you (or someone you know) will enjoy it too!
