I feel like this is the culmination of something for me. I think I'm going to read a John Green book now.
Respectfully, I have no desire to be the authoritative John Green on bluesky :) Godspeed to you, sir.
In the first Trump administration I was constantly seeing stories from NYT, WSJ, etc., that would describe inner workings and dysfunctions of white house and inevitably include a line like "this account is based on interviews with more than 25 administration officials"

Looking to get up-to-speed on cross imputation: getting a relationship between X and Y in dataset 1, and then imputing Y in dataset 2 where I have X but no Y.

I'm told this might be more of a sociology thing -- would love any papers/handbook chapters for the state of the art. #econsky #sociology

back in maybe 2022 there was this brilliant video of Ben Simmons passing up wide open layups in 2K with Steve Nash (remember when he was coach?) looking around in disbelief

I assume it's lost to internet history but would love to find this... #sixers #nba

Last year, the JHU economics ML reading group worked through "Estimating Nonlinear Heterogeneous Agent Models with Neural Networks" from Kase at el. Today @qingyuanfang.bsky.social walked us through the authors' code: github.com/tseep/estima...

I think a useful heuristic for social science is: is this question interesting if I find a (precise) null effect?

And I will submit that the problem with a lot of these fraudulent marketing studies is the answer was clearly "no."

"Some studies implicitly adopt the view that, perhaps because of some benevolent identification deity, the data at hand necessarily include some set of conditioning variables that suffice for the CIA."

incredible line from Barnow and Smith (2015) 🔥🔥

There is some good in this world
Inside The NBA is expected to continue on ABC/ESPN and will be produced by TNT Sports, according to a source briefed on the agreement.

I know the crypto crowd won big and bitcoin is at record levels, etc., but I am still so incredibly down on this whole thing. Like, it's-going-to-go-to-$0-eventually level down on it.

Trump’s win has Bitcoin soaring. The ‘normies’ want in.
Expectation that the new Trump administration will be favorable to cryptocurrency has sent prices soaring, luring in some investors for the first time.

I feel like the word "elite" has just fully lost its usefulness after the 2024 election. I can't think of a coherent definition that fits all the ways it has been thrown around the last week and a half.
An ex-NY Times columnist and Ivy League grad interviewed a billionaire about how he, the world’s richest man, and several other billionaires helped another billionaire/Ivy League grad/real estate mogul world defeat an HBCU grad to reclaim the most powerful office in the world.

The headline:

Life as a PhD student has been rough on my eyes and I'm really feeling it. I downloaded an app to make the light on my computer gentler (justgetflux.com) and I'm trying to take more screen breaks; anyone have other tips? Are blue light glasses real?

The democratic party is an actual coalition, much more diverse (ideologically) than the Trumpified republicans. For this reason I feel like it's a bit of a Rorschach test -- everybody sees something different.
As a result, a majority of Americans perceives Democrats as the more ideologically extreme party, and a lot of voters seem to have been convinced that Kamala Harris was running solely on whatever “woke” bogeyman is out there.

This is a real issue for which Democrats need to find a solution.

This is such a cheat code for a great affordable vacation! Vegas heavily subsidizes flights and there are about a million beautiful parks within a few hours’ drive (we did Zion + Bryce when we went), really one of the most beautiful parts of the country
I wanted to contribute to the good vibes on this site and wanted to share some pics from my last trip with my fiancé to the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, and Las Vegas. :)
