My new op-ed just came out in the San Antonio Express-News: “Reconciliation begins where we serve together.” It's on Pope Leo XIV "On Love of the Poor", on how love can break down walls and brings people together. www.expressnews.com/opinion/comm...
Pope Leo’s call to love the poor could cross political aisles and heal divisions
We might find that healing the nation begins in the hands that reach out to one another.

I’m glad to share results from our national study of Catholic law school graduates. Compared to secular peers, they are more likely to practice law, to connect their work with their values, and to serve in civic leadership.

Just returned from a weekend with fellow Catholic ethicists from @ctewc.bsky.social. Had good conversations about the future of moral theology and how we can support one another in our global networks. Here's a photo of those of us from North America.

Can theology survive the crisis in Catholic higher education?
The world of academic theology is facing the cumulative effect of long-building forces, forces reshaping not only theology but the entire structure of higher education.

Just as Pope Leo XIV calls the Church to unity, his story is already raising tough questions—about family, division, and what binds us together. I offered a few reflections in this @ReligionNews article on the Pope and his brother. #PopeLeoXIV #ReligionAndPolitics religionnews.com/2025/05/23/c...
Catholics see a familiar political divide in Pope Leo XIV and his eldest brother
(RNS) — Catholic leaders hope the pope’s relationship with his brother will help Catholics in the US learn to better love each other in spite of political differences.

I think this makes doing theology in the broader public difficult. No matter what you say, it seems like you are advocating for one party or another. Instead of just talking about the gospel and its demands on our lives. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/16/s...

Working on my book about Catholic higher education. Turns out research suggests that cuts—tuition, programs, core, faculty— don't save colleges. They may give a short-term boost but often make things worse long-term. Cuts frame education economically and make the college look like a discount store.

Should we worry that relationships and community are becoming a luxury item?
Who are the most likely to rarely feel lonely?

I thought it was the highly educated. But it's not.

It's people with the highest income.

If you compare people at the same income level, education is completely inconsequential when it comes to self reported loneliness.
