So what's the best debut in the greatest decade for music.
The harmonies, the rickenbackers and four serious songwriters.
This album changed everything.

The Byrds were always a stepping stone for Gram. Sweetheart was great but the sound he strived for happened with The Burritos. He changed country music and he doesn't get enough credit for it.

The first Velvets album is almost a right of passage for those exploring a certain kind of music. I still remember the feeling when I heard Sunday Morning for the first time.

Gene was the best songwriter in the original line up of The Byrds. His songwriting skills didn't disappear when he left but he was criminally ignored.
This is an absolute masterpiece.

Ok top 5
Number 5
Everybody goes on about Odyssey And Oracle but for me the debut is their finest. Bought it 2nd hand when I was 15/16 and it blew me away. Zombies are one of the most underrated bands of the 60s.

Very difficult to leave this out but I'm a bigger fan of the 2nd album...Vans voice is better but this is still a classic but it just misses out on my final 5.

The first supergroup from both sides of the pond got together at the end of the decade to make this incredible sound. They would only make 2 albums that mattered but that's all they needed.

One of the loudest records in my collection. The Who took no prisoners when they came out with this. Still sounds incredible that this amazing sound emerges from all the chaos

He would go on to become the greatest artist ever but his debut only contained 2 originals. I love his version of House Of The Rising Sun. Thought this would make my 5 but no.

Cutting 10 down to 5
Number 10
Probably one of the most important debuts of the decade because of what followed. What I love about this is that it sounds like they're playing it live. A really honest record.

Making a big call here. I love Vans stuff on the Bang label even if he didn't. The bridge between Them and Astral Weeks. Great debut but is it one of the 10 greatest of the decade..probably not.

Summer 1980 I asked one of the older local Mods to make a tape for me. The Artwoods were on that tape. A friend found me the album in London and I was hooked. Completely love their sound. Not in my top 5 but almost made the 10.

You could probably do a top 5 from The Byrds family tree alone and it would be hard to argue with it. I won't though. Genes work after The Byrds is so underrated..especially this.
However I've no room for it.

Really struggling to cut this shortlist from 15 to 10. Every choice will be questionable, difficult and will probably seem wrong.
Anyway here goes. I'll start by leaving these 2 go.

When people talk about Etta James it's always the mid to late 60s stuff but the debut is really strong. It's got more of a 50s feel and it really leaves a lot of room for her voice. Love this record but I have to let it go.

2 seriously soulful records but with completely different styles and approaches. Love the production on both of them. Very live sounding. No frills..the music speaks for itself. However I can't fit them into my last 15.

I'm a huge fan of the early 60s girl groups mainly on the Red Bird and Phillies labels. The Shangri-las and Ronettes are the best representatives of this genre, the latter synonymous with Phil Spectors Wall Of Sound. The 2 debuts however will go no further than my final 20.

It's hard to separate these 2 albums. I love the sound of them but at a push I'd probably go for Astrud because I love her voice. Played some tracks from it djing at the weekend.
Unfortunately none of them will make my final 5.

Time to start cutting this shortlist from 25 to 20. Very hard as they're all absolute classics. I'll start with these 3.

Bought this years ago second hand and while it's a great record they probably fall a little short in the songwriting department so I'll leave it out.

This album was a major game changer at the time because it was the launching pad for that classic Bacharach sound.
However the ill advised inclusion of Zip A Dee Doo Dah means it won't make my final 25.

Very hard to cut these down at this stage so I'll be ruthless. Great record but they weren't there yet.

An album that doesn't get enough love and respect. While not a patch on what came after it's still a good debut with some good tunes. Backing vocals a bit over the top sometimes. Unfortunately it won't make my final 25.
