Interested in history of ideas. Current reading project: understanding how modern synthesis came about.
Great to have Prof Shihua Zhang from Chinese Academy of Science. A humble person passionate about science. Impressed by their tools for spatial omics.

Had a delightful evening talking to him. We agree that there should be more occasions like this in the coming year 👍🏻

E B Ford told us one of his colleagues lamented that today's knowledge is but tomorrow's error. Another colleaugue corrected the former, saying that today's knowledge is tomorrow's special case. This is a wonderful scientific version of the 'is the class half empty or half full' expression.

Melbourne airport T1 is evacuated because of 🔥alarm. We’re the 13th flight queuing to enter the airport …

Dramatic ending of #ABACBS2025 for Melbournians 😫

Took the opportunity to visit Darwin’s greatest student 😃

Besides, if you’re interested in old buildings, St Peter’s Cathedral in Adelaide is definitely worth visiting

We need more conference front line reporters like @sagrikachugh.bsky.social and @jovmaksimovic.bsky.social 😄

Didn’t attend the conference but felt I did
Did my best to help a bit to get academic twitter back. Hopefully we can continue. Thanks and congratulations to @jovmaksimovic.bsky.social too.
Thanks @abacbs.bsky.social #ABACBS2025 for an amazing conference.

The diffusion of CellDiffusion is non stoppable 😄
The conference fun continues at the main #ABACBS2025!

I'll be at the poster session this Wednesday (Nov 26th). Come say hi!

My spot is easy to remember: I'm Poster No. 1!

Another reason to plan a Brisbane trip in 2026
Cancer Bioinformatics Australia was proud to be a supporting partner at #abacbs2025 and sponsor the Cancer and Molecular Medicine session.

For more cancer bioinformatics, follow us for updates on CBA which will be held in Brisbane in 2026

Got these for $30. The smaller one is a concise version of the larger. Ford is a key figure in modern synthesis. He reviewed field observations for his theory on supergene and polymorphism. Ford’s dense style reminded me of his close ally RA Fisher, both in denial of the importance of genetic drift

Galton’s Hereditary Genius, a reprint of 2nd ed. First book to use the term eugenics. Galton’s cousin Darwin respected his abilities, citing Galton’s work in eg The Descent of Man. Darwin seems to have been unenthusiastic about eugenics, sparing him from having his reputation ruined a century later

I find it disrespectful when people, such as Pauline Hanson, wrap themselves in our flag and treat it as a cheap theatrical prop to push their political agenda.

Habits taught physicists to look for elegant laws in biology. But biology’s only rule is: whatever works. Whatever that works, regardless how inelegant, will be embedded in organisms via evolution.

This reminds me of the recent Themis to Workday mayhem at unimelb. Don’t change what already works!

A very successful workshop on spatial transcriptomics! Great fun working with @bhuvad.bsky.social & Melody Jin. The audience were most engaged 🥰

Out materials covers QC, normalisation, cell states annotation, niche identification and differential genes in ST data: bhuvad.github.io/CosMxSpatial...

Great to have talked about PhiSpace at WEHI. I think we have the coolest team member photos.

PhiSpace has 7 case vignettes now, covering bulk RNA-seq, single-cell multiomics and spatial RNA-seq. Particularly surprised by the performance of PhiSpace when applied to quantify T cell state changes caused by genetic perturbations. jiadongm.github.io/PhiSpace/art...

A new test for LLM? 😂 Seems that the newest Claude 4.0 has no clue about violin finguring. It says the openning bar of violin part here is played using 1st position, but it should be 3rd. I tried a few pieces. Seems that Claude has no difficulty understanding other aspects but finguring

When Menzies founded the liberal party a big part of their support actually came from women and first home buyers. A Stark contrast.
Wow, this was an election that just keeps on giving. Now it’s blown up the Coalition. Albo must have got the Pope to use his divine contacts.
