👋🏽 new followers on @bsky.app. Jessica Bari here. I head up Call to Mind, American Public Media & @mprnews.org mental health initiative. We release broadcast specials to public radio stations with the goal to foster new conversations about mental health. Talking about mental health? Let’s connect!
Documented & undocumented folks have so much to think about if they are victims of domestic violence. Will they overlap w/ ICE if they report or need medical services? Will they be deported back to their abuser? If they live w/ their abuser in the US - is their choice btwn deportation or abuse? 💔

On Veterans Day, I'm sharing an episode of Call to Mind - Silent Battles: Mental Health & Military Service. I learned a lot while working on this show. The experiences of combat & non-combat duty can significantly affect wellbeing. We hear some powerful stories.

Cities where police, community orgs, & social services work together = less violent crime. Last summer the city of Camden hosted events w the police dept & had a homicide-free summer. An example that creating healthy communities is best for wellbeing & safety.

What Camden’s homicide-free summer reveals about community safety and health outcomes
Camden, N.J., recorded no homicides this summer. The milestone is a good starting point for reporters covering gun violence solutions.

Annually the Stress in America report dives into what's stressing out people in the US. This year revealed more loneliness but with a twist that societal divisions are contributing to isolation and lack of connections. Lots to learn about from this year's findings.

More than 20% of adults in the US get their news from online influencers. It's most common among younger adults, but cuts across age groups. Least favorite finding - entertainment value (...in news) is one of the biggest reasons people turn to news influencers.

Appreciate when people think about gun violence as a public health issue vs a crime issue. Since 2000 there’ve been 800,000 deaths from gun violence in the US and about 60% of firearm deaths are suicides. A new report lays out solutions anchored in prevention.

40-yrs ago today Eleanor Bumpurs was killed during an eviction. She was a Black woman with a history of mental health crises, killed by police with seemingly little training.
