I can say definitively that my Judaism has changed. It has changed in a thousand tiny ways. What does it all mean? Only time will tell.
I think it is worth naming that I believe Judaism has/is/will be changing as a result of the last two years of war. The narrative around this feels like it tends to point to extremist ways of responding to this, like Jews can and should be abandoning Judaism as a result of the war (and politics of it) or that everyone's response should be rabid patriotism. I see a lot of articles trying to explain how Judaism has changed for all of us or that it shouldn't change at all. But I think it misses the most important nuance: Judaism changes when Jews change, and it should. The last two years have changed the Jewish people profoundly, and as such, Judaism has and will change. Just me personally, and not limited to this: Fast days are different now when I think about the suffering of the hostages and the food scarcity experienced by Gazans. I cannot help but hold that in my mind as my stomach begins to ache. I haven't cried in Jewish joy as much as when the hostages have come home, and haven't felt so Jewishly broken when I think about the innocent families torn apart. The ideas of Jewish peoplehood and kol yisrael arevim zeh lezeh have never felt more salient and powerful to me than in the last two years. Standing in a minyan feels different now. Every week, I think about how Pharaoh's heart was hardened and how essential it is not to allow that to happen to me. I think about my relationship to the Divine and what it demands of me anew every week. I think about the arrogance I expressed as an American Jew, never truly understanding the experience of Israelis. And yet realize that both Israelis and diaspora Jews have more to learn from each other than ever. Jewish peoplehood feels different. Outside of my academic studies, I haven't spent more time learning and relearning the history of my people. I have learned new things that have inspired new ideas and reflections on my Jewish experience and identity. The last two years have changed me, my Judaism, my Zionism, my sense of Amiyut (peoplehood), and I'm not going to pretend it hasn't. And I think we shouldn't pretend it hasn't changed Judaism and the Jewish people. We are not the same as we were. I think the risk is trying to understand how it has changed in the middle of the experience, to make maximalist statements about who we have become. We just don't know yet. In therapy, I've learned that in the middle of an experience, the most I can do is make the best decisions I can make, feel all the feelings, and then intellectualize my understanding later. We can't jump to the end and say that "nothing should change!" or that we know how our Judaisms have changed. I can say definitively that my Judaism has changed. It has changed in a thousand tiny ways. What does it all mean? Only time will tell.

Here's why I keep using the word fascist: 1. They built concentration camps, then they "lost" the prisoners. They will try again. 2. They built a secret police in ICE. They will keep coming for your neighbors. 3. They are using threats to curb free speech. They will not stop trying to limit your voice. 4. They used the US military against Americans. They will do it again. The Trump Administration and their GOP enablers are fascists. Their actions are fascist. They're fascists.
