🎆📯 Northern Lights klaxon 📯🎆

Yes that's right, tonight offers another chance to catch a glimpse of the beautiful aurora borealis.

It looks like the strongest aurora will happen before midnight – but it'll depend on where you are in the UK and if you have clear skies. ☁️

Good luck!

Can confirm that my NSF grant "How False Beliefs Form & How to Correct Them" was cancelled today because it is "not in alignment with current NSF priorities" Shocking that understanding how people are misled by false information is now a forbidden topic. Our work will continue but at a smaller scale
NSF has posted an “update on priorities.”

They’re canceling all “DEI and misinformation/disinformation” grants.

And the guidance on how to fulfill the longstanding, legally mandated Broadening Participation requirement is utterly incoherent.

Interesting and (to me) somewhat surprising results from a huge international survey about science engagement matthewfacciani.substack.com/p/how-the-wo... , leaves me wanting to know more about how they the survey
How the World Talks About Science
Our new international study finds that science communication looks very different depending on culture, media systems, and access to technology.

I wouldn't have believed this was real but apparently it is. Holy moly

I love it that everyone loves a #supermoon. Tonight is the night so #DoLookUp!

Fine print: this astronomical event comes with a expectation-management disclaimer:
*The Supermoon is only 15% brighter than a normal full moon and I personally can not tell the difference 🤔
*Every moon is SUPER🔭🥳
If you've got clear skies, go outside and wave at our neighbour who is looking particularly stunning tonight. And if you have them, root out the binoculars to get a closer look at the grey maria: ~3.5 billion years ago these were seas of molten lava 🤓 #supermoon 🔭🧪

I don't know who needs to hear this, but please stop blowing that poor recorder so hard. It doesn't 'just sound like that', that squawkiness is the sound of it calling out for help.

I'll be at Norman Lockyer Observatory in Sidmouth tonight talking about 100 Hours at their public observing event. I've heard the view through their telesope is AMAZING (and I heard that from a keen amateur astronomer who's played with a lot of telescopes) normanlockyer.com
