When mulching with leaves backfires 🤦🏻‍♀️. Whatever the secret sauce for breaking maple seed dormancy is, this winter found it. Now what?! #gardening #ecology #farming

Just cancelled my lab’s in-person participation at a conference in the United States. I’m so disappointed and sad that it has come to this. I agonized for days over this and got some very good advice to arrive at this decision. What a sad and unnecessary situation. #canada #academicchatter #ecology

What a thrill of a lifetime to get to speak with Robin Wall Kimmerer this evening. I hear some folx couldn’t get into the zoom, but the will be posting the recording on the West Vancouver Library website soon and I’ll be sure to post a link when it is! A great afternoon with the Nuu-chah-nulth territories’ land guardians for their Indigenous stewardship workshop with Parks Canada (Pacific Rim National Park Reserve). An awesome group of like minded folx. Good medicine to share with them. #indigenousstem #landguardians #ecology #parkscanada

The hope of starting seeds has begun. I love this setup. It’s over the furnace vent too so no need for heat mats. Tomatoes, peppers, flowers for now. Squash, cukes and herbs in a few weeks. #gardening #foodsecurity

This week I received confirmation of my registration under Canada’s Indian Act. A mix of emotions comes with it. I only share because my identity was made the business of other, laterally violent people last year & to shine a light on the fact many of us are still finding our way home. Onwards.

A pause from regular programming. I choked up this morning watching my girls with their coach on the ice. Our hearts are with #usfigureskating over the loss of kids and coaches whilst pursuing their dreams. I can’t help but think of their parents and families enduring such loss. 💔

I try to find something to admire about every invasive plant. The rooting ability of Himalayan blackberry is one such quality. Imagine if we all had the ability to reach out and ground ourselves wherever we go. I could do without the thorns. #whatintheweedwednesday #ecology #invasivespecies
