X was beside her, tall and steady, an arm wrapped around her waist as he slowly scanned the room from floor to ceiling. His eyes moved over every painting, every ceramic, as though he were committing them all to memory.

He let out a breath that wasn’t quite a laugh and wasn’t quite a word.

The doors of 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘎𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘳𝘺 slid open with a soft chime, and for a moment Val just stood there, frozen in place.

Her gallery.
Her art on the walls.
Her work in the warm lights.

When they finally got up to leave, Val impulsively wrapped her arms around Asha, hugging her tightly.

Asha froze only for a moment before hugging her daughter back. Feeling that she finally had her daughter back.

Val’s relief looked like sunlight.
She grinned back, cheeks flushed, shoulders easing.

They spent the rest of dinner laughing about old stories, about the giraffe again, about Sora’s dramatic tendencies.

“Do you want to come?”

Asha blinked, confused. So Val clarified, fiddling with her fork:

“To the grand opening.”

It was quiet for a half-second—just long enough for Val to regret asking—before Asha’s whole face warmed with a smile.

“Of course I do.”

It made Val soften in places she didn’t even know had gone hard.
By the time their plates were almost empty, Val looked down shyly, lip caught between her teeth.

“Mom?”

Asha looked up with a curious hum.

Val hesitated… then blurted it out.

Asha listened. 𝘙𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 listened.
Her eyes stayed fixed on Val’s face, following every animated gesture, every shift of excitement. She even asked questions—real ones.

“How many pieces do you have so far?”
“You’re doing pottery too? That’s wonderful.”
“X must be proud of you.”

Val stared for a moment, weighing that. And something in her expression loosened like her heart didn’t fully believe it, but wanted to.

So she talked.

About how X surprised her on Winterfest with the building. About how she’d been painting until 2 AM almost every night.

“You can… talk to me about it. If you want.”

Val shook her head. “Mom, it’s okay. I know you don’t care.”
It came out defensive, maybe even a little hurt.

But Asha shook her head quickly. “I 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 to know, Val.”

Her voice was soft, careful, like she was tiptoeing on thin ice.

“Oh. Yeah.”

She shrugged, almost embarrassed to talk about something she loved. “X bought it for me. It opens next week.”

Asha nodded—stiff, too formal, like she was trying not to say the wrong thing. She folded the corner of her napkin, then leaned the tiniest bit closer.

Asha finally cleared her throat, softly at first, then again with a little more confidence.

“Soooo… an art gallery?”

Val froze mid-sip of her drink, lowering the glass slowly. Her cheeks warmed as she looked down, suddenly shy.

The restaurant Asha picked was small and warm, with golden lights reflecting softly off the wooden tables. Val sat across from her mother, fingers fidgeting with the edge of her napkin. The silence between them stretched and stretched… not tense, exactly, but fragile.

They returned to their seats as the teacher wrapped up the lesson in front of his doodle-covered board.

“Well! I hope you liked this class, and I can’t wait to see you both again!”

Asha, always polite. “Thank you. It was wonderful.”

By the time they were done, Val was placing her beautiful piece into the kiln, proud and satisfied. Asha placed her glob-vase next to it with the gentle reverence of someone putting a newborn in a crib.

Had she missed that much about her own daughter?

Trying to hide the sudden swell of emotion, Asha focused back on her project and decided to glaze it. If it couldn’t look good, it could at least look intentional. She painted it white—simple, clean, safe.

Asha paused, hands still on her poor glob-vase, watching her daughter from the corner of her eye.

𝘚𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘨𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘳𝘺?
𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘥𝘪𝘥 𝘐 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵?

She felt a tiny sting in her chest—not jealousy, but regret. Val looked so alive talking about art.

The teacher lit up, instantly launching into a conversation about firing temperatures, hand-building techniques, glazing styles. Val followed effortlessly, talking with the kind of spark Asha hadn’t seen in years.

The teacher wandered over, eyes widening when he saw Val’s work.

“Oh wow… you’re already a professional!”

Val smiled but didn’t look away from her clay. “I’ve done pottery before. I actually have an art gallery opening soon. I want to include pottery pieces in what I sell.”

Asha… was fighting for her life.

She sat stiffly, back perfectly straight so her dress didn’t crease, poking cautiously at the clay like it was a sleeping animal that might attack her. Whatever shape she was making looked more like a disgruntled blob than a vase.

After the intro, the man clapped his hands.
“Okay! Time to actually start doing, eh?”

The girls moved to the wheels.

Val sat at hers like it was her throne, immediately wetting her hands and coaxing the clay upward with skill that looked effortless.

Asha listened as if she was preparing for a college exam—brow furrowed, hands folded neatly in her lap, trying so 𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘥 to understand. She wasn’t a creative person, not in the way Val was, but she wanted to do this right.

The teacher launched into an introduction, explaining how they’d be forming, shaping, smoothing, then glazing their creations. He gestured dramatically at his diagrams, then at the tools lined neatly on each table.
