We’re loving Australia but the speed limits are crazy. 100 kph on narrow, winding two-lane roads with no shoulders, and that seems to be largely regarded as the minimum speed.

Well, the weather forecasters totally blew it yesterday. We were expecting an inch or two of snow in the Champlain Valley but ended up with seven. The NWS issued a weather advisory at the last minute but too late to do any good. Roads were a mess but lucky for me I didn’t have to be out.

Tip for getting rid of some of the many boxes of remaindered books you bought from your publisher for pennies on the dollar: put them in a place where your cat will pee on them. (Not the one in my profile picture!)

The delightful W. Somerset Maugham, on the overuse of trite phrases: “The Americans…can carry on an amusing and animated conversation without giving a moment’s reflection to what they are saying and so leave their minds free to consider the more important matters of big business and fornication.”

I’m probably not the first to ask, but what is the point of a dry cup, pint, or quart? It is meaningless when cooking. Why don’t cookbooks in the U.S. give quantities in weight rather than volume?

My father served in the military in WWII. He was part of the largest anti-fascist movement in history. I’m proud to say that I’m an anti-fascist too.

This song comes to mind frequently of late. Written for John Lennon when they were trying to deport him.

Remember that “golden age of prosperity” that happened after Republicans gave the 1% a huge tax cut in 2017? Me neither.

According to his doctor, the President is in excellent health, as evidenced by his many golfing victories. He is just the second person in history to sink twelve holes-in-one on a nine-hole course, a feat previously achieved only by Kim Jong Un.

RFK Jr.:

Ultra processed foods are bad.
Ultra processed foods often contain seed oils.
Therefore, seed oils are bad.

How did this guy ever get a college degree, much less a law degree?

The danger to the Democratic Party is not, as Schumer and his ilk claim, that people will blame it for shutting down the government, but that people will no longer see any difference between it and the Republican Party.

What needs to be made crystal clear to the American public is that Trump and Musk are not recklessly dismantling federal agencies in order to make life better for us, but to enrich themselves and destroy any obstacles to the greater accumulation of wealth and power for the very richest Americans.

Not “no one making less than $400K will pay more taxes” but “everyone making less than $400K will get a tax break, and the top 2% will pay for it.” Rather than tax credits for those who can’t use them, eliminate tax credits for those who don’t need them.

Democrats: If you want to win elections focus on tax fairness and the insane costs of health care, child care, housing, college tuition, and elder care. Yes, racism, misogyny, xenophobia, and corruption are horrible but most people won’t vote on these issues when they simply can’t make ends meet.

Well now this is precious: Trump wants to do away with the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, which would exonerate Hunter Biden of Trump’s [completely bogus] accusation that Bidem took bribes from Ukraine.

Hmmm. Wondering why we would choose to pay American Airlines a fee for the privilege of choosing seats when we would still have to pay extra for those seats.

Subaru service tells me my brand-new Subaru-factory battery died because our 2018 Outback has a device that keeps searching for a 3G network, which no longer exists, and this continuous, fruitless search drained the battery. I’ve heard a lot of absurd things the last few days.
