I had planned to see this in the theater, and my regular movie watching partner was on board, but life got in the way, films don’t stick around the the theater as long as they used and the second run cinemas are almost all gone, which is a shame because as gorgeous as the 4K HDR copy I watched was, some movies just benefit from seeing it on a huge screen with immersive sound.

Halloween is done for the year, and this is what this blog's content will look like most of the time. Four nights after my last post and I finally feel like writing again. I will say, overall, I found it easier to write the reviews this time compared to back in 2019 and I thought it would be good to do a wrap-up. Why did I do it, what was my goal, did I learn anything? Night 31 of 31 Nights of Horror Every Halloween, I do the same thing. Once I’m certain no more trick-or-treaters are coming, I take down the decorations, make a three layer nacho dip, turn off the lights and watch John Carpenter’s The Thing. There is nothing I don’t love about this movie. From the opening scene it has the viewer asking questions, and every answer leads to new questions.

Night 30 of 31 Nights of Horror We are on the second to last night of the marathon, and it occurred to me that I had not yet watched a zombie movie. So I'll correct that oversight with what will turn out to be the oldest, lowest budget, yet highest rated movie so far. It has an average rating of 95% on 82 reviews and an audience score of 87 on Rotten Tomatoes and I agree with them.

Night 29 of 31 Nights of Horror Clive Barker neither wrote, nor directed this film, but it is based on one of his short stories from the Books of Blood collection (Volume 5, "The Forbidden" if you want to read it yourself). Bernard Rose is both writer and director, and the movie stars Tony Todd and Virginia Madsen. So the story starts out amazing.

Night 28 of 31 Nights of Horror I thought I had seen this movie already, but after watching last night, I realize I must only have seen the trailer, or maybe caught snippets of it on TV, because I didn't remember any of it and believe me, the one thing I think everyone can agree on about Videodrome is that it is memorable.

Night 27 of 31 Nights of Horror I had never heard of this movie before reading an article on a blog called Longbox of Darkness. The premise sounded interesting. A trio of female reporters find themselves staying overnight in a house occupied by a hostile being lurking in the basement. I really liked that The Howling had reporters as the main characters, and this movie stays Barbara Bach, who I only knew from her role in The Spy Who Loved me.

Night 26 of 31 Nights of Horror Despite how the poster looks, this is not p[art of the Mad Max franchise, it is the second movie written and directed by Wes Craven, and it is much better than some of his later works *cough*peopleunderthestairs*cough*. To set your expectations though, this is a low budget grindhouse film. It doesn't have the polish of A Nightmare on Elm Street, but it still works.

Night 25 of 31 Nights of Horror My wife watched the first thirty minutes of the film with me, then she stood up and declared "This is a bad movie" and went to bed. I'm not going to go that far. People have different likes and dislikes and it's unfair to make statements like that based on your own personal tastes.

Night 24 of 31 Nights of Horror As of 2025 Johnny Depp has been in over 70 movies and has a net worth of approximate $150 million dollars and it all started with A Nightmare on Elm Street. He's not even the star of this movie, Heather Langenkamp is, although, it could be argued it's really Robert Englund's Freddy Krueger.

Night 23 of 31 Nights of Horror Remember how I said Stephen King didn't like Kubrick's adaptation of The Shining? Yeah, that's mild compared to how Allan Moore feels about ALL of the movies based on his works. Given how often people have taken his ideas and characters and stripped all the meaning out of his graphic novels, I'm not surprised by his reaction, and From Hell is no exception, but it is a really good Jack The Ripper story.

If you're not in the mood for movies and have a group of friends over, might I suggest some themed games appropriate for Halloween? Zombies! Judging by the number of Walking Dead spinoffs, zombies are still popular (George Romero's daughter has a zombie movie coming out that I'm looking forward to) and board games are not immune to this. Night 22 of 31 Nights of Horror This movie is surprisingly ahead of it's time. It's about an AI that takes control of a smart home and kidnaps the woman who lives there, and it was made almost 50 years ago. Although, people back then obviously thought we'd be further along technologically than we actually are. This smart home was making drinks for people and opening doors, while I still can't get Alexa to just remove the picture-in-picture on my Fire TV after my Blink doorbell rings (all three are Amazon products by the way).

Night 21 of 31 Nights of Horror Before the re-watch, I remembered I liked this movie, but I had forgotten how unsatisfying the ending was. The film stars Johnny Depp as an amoral dealer in rare books. His character is kind of a dick and he plays it well. He's hired by and even bigger dick (Frank Langella) to track down and compare two copies of a very rare book to his.

Night 20 of 31 Nights of Horror In 1985 I watched the Michael J. Fox comedy Teen Wolf. I loved it and did for a long time. Ginger Snaps is like the anti-Teen Wolf and it is soooo much better. Both are coming of age movies about outcast teens that become werewolves. Both have scenes with sports in them and both movies star Canadians, That's pretty much where the similarities end.

Night 19 of 31 Nights of Horror The only thing I knew about this movie before watching it was that it was set at a ballet school, and I only knew that much from the promos released when the re-make came out in 2018. Unlike a lot of the other films I’ve watched this month, I’d never even seen the box for it at any of the video stores I’ve worked at.

Night 18 of 31 Nights of Horror I mean... It's The Shining. Not a lot for me to add that hasn't already been said many times about this film. In the forty years since it's release, there have been countless articles and interviews related to it, research papers, essays, probably a few doctoral thesis as well, not to mention all the books about Stanley Kubrick that have been published.

Night 17 of 31 Nights of Horror For the longest time, I thought this was a Stephen King story. There’s just something about it that made me associate it with him. Probably the similarity between the “The Shop” and the company in Scanners that was producing a drug that gave people mental abilities. That’s not a spoiler by the way, it’s pretty much explained right at the beginning.

Night 16 of 31 Nights of Horror In 52 years, I have watched a lot of movies. Some of them have been very bizarre. I've seen The Forbidden Zone, A Clockwork Orange, Killer Klownz from Outer Space and most everything David Cronenberg has directed. Possession is right up there as one of the weirdest movies I've ever watched. The people in this movie act weird, they stand too close, they don't look at each other when they talk, they flail against the walls, they say the most bizarre stuff that nobody else in the scene reacts to, their characters are inconsistent from one scene to the next and I've watched Sam Neil sit in a chair in plenty of other movies, so I know he can do it without looking so manic, so this all must be intentional on the part of the director.

Night 15 of 31 Nights of Horror I want to start of by saying, the movie is not as bad as the Rotten Tomatoes score would indicate. I mean, it's nowhere near as good as the first movie, but it's not terrible. I think people were just disappointed when they compare it to the original, and they used the rating system to reflect that.

So young that I didn't realize until this re-watch, that it wasn't a normal cigarette that JoBeth Williams' character was smoking in bed. Sometimes, as an adult, when you watch a movie that you have fond memories of as a child, the experience isn't as good as you remember.

Night 13 of 31 Nights of Horror A product of the Roger Corman factory that produced incredibly successful directors, Joe Dante has made some of my most loved movies. Gremlins, Innerspace, Explorers and the underrated Tom Hanks masterpiece, The Burbs. Until now though, I had never watched The Howling. I don’t think it’s giving away anything to say this is a werewolf film.
