In the shining Jack could be a caretaker of a hotel or a teacher or someone who mows people’s lawns or a handyman or a checkout guy at a grocery store and he could’ve fully supported his family in any of those roles, but now in 2025 we basically expect people to be poor if they do any of those

When I taught in NC, I could always tell when the fire alarm was going to go off because the air would stop flowing right before; suddenly a background noise that I barely recognized would go away and I would brace myself for the loud alarm. And I just realized I still do it 6 years later
