Respecting a patient's wishes must come first.
if I know the patient, I know what their wishes are, I see them suffering, and there’s nothing more I can do to help their suffering then, absolutely, I would hold their hand and help them achieve what they want to achieve.’ metro.co.uk/2025/06/09/t...

And then it happened. Calmly, quickly, with dignity. In a room full of love, with smiles on their faces and without any pain. Beautiful ❤️ #Choice

We will not be discouraged.

I also picked up on Dr Chloe Hurst’s point that, of dying patients who are prescribed the life-ending medication, 30% don’t go on to use it.

Demonstrates palliative effect of having choice & that patients don’t take medication as soon as it’s prescribed but only when they need to or not at all.
As a GP I've been massively reassured by testimony from overseas medic's in Committee. Witnesses from the US and Aus. are clear assisted dying is working well, preventing suffering, and providing genuine choice for dying people at the end of their lives.

VAD offers dignity, agency and choice about one's own death - opt-in and criteria based, if you aren't a fan then don't request it.

Tasmanian legislation clearly differentiates thusly: #VAD is a choice between death and death, whereas suicide is a choice between life and death.

Thank you for making this distinction @kimleadbeatermp.bsky.social

Assisted dying is about exercising control over the manner and timing of a death that is inevitable and imminent.

This is about shortening death, not shortening life.
