The One Who Divorced Religion - Janice Selbie - Beyond The Surface
Janice shares her story of growing up in religion, specifically a Pentecostal family in Canada, where vibrant expressions of faith like speaking in tongues were part of daily life. Raised by parents transformed by their beliefs, she navigated the tension between familial love, purity culture, and the pull of individual identity, a journey that would eventually inspire her to write Divorcing Religion. Janice reflects on pivotal moments, from high school relationships that sparked a crisis of faith to a “back to Jesus” chapter that ultimately gave way to deconstruction. We discuss the emotional toll of leaving fundamentalism, the comfort she found in new secular communities, and the healing role of open conversation, resources like Dr. Marlene Winnell’s work. Through candid reflections on family boundaries, forgiveness, and self-acceptance, Janice offers a heartfelt look at religious trauma and the resilience it takes to move beyond it, leaving listeners with both hope and a sense of solidarity. This was such an interesting conversation. My aim with the Sex & Power Podcast is to platform speakers and messages that the current US administration would disapprove of. youtu.be/8sJR9QkwLd0?...

This brightened my morning: There is a continuing decline in UK church attendance. Hopefully they’re finding better ways to spend their time - and more inclusive communities to be part of.

Well done, Nepal, for kicking out Christians who proselytize in your nation. All countries should do likewise.

Many people worry when anger appears after they’ve left a controlling or religious system. They assume something is wrong. In reality, anger often waits until it is safe. When obedience was required for belonging, anger was dangerous. Anger emerging later means your nervous system is catching up.

A child is dead after a so-called “exorcism." The defense: Belief in the supernatural. 🙄🤬

When belief systems teach people to distrust reality, instincts, & evidence in favor of Invisible Authority, harm is seen as obedience.

Indoctrination does not cancel accountability. She deserved better.

It’s like being sucker-punched; having the wind knocked out of you. Awake in the middle of the night, replaying conversations and searching for when the cracks first started to appear. Betrayal feels personal. I know because I’ve been there.

Oh, no! I’VE BEEN WARNED! Also: since I am not getting paid, that must mean I am a demon. 🙄 Anyhoo, this is from a real person who probably votes. We owe it to humanity to keep speaking out against religious malarkey. Please VOTE for critical thinkers, only. Stop putting cult members into power.

Teaching children that their group is uniquely chosen by a god is dangerous. It shrinks compassion. Religious identity + whiteness & nationalism = A sense of moral superiority that is protected from challenge.

Beliefs that depend on enemies to define righteousness fuel racism & exclusion. #ice
