one time in high school my orchestra played a bonus gig at the director’s church. the concert also included a piece by the children’s handbell choir, but one of the kids didn’t show. I had played handbells in my church, so they asked me to sub in.

very funny and inaccurate to me that people conflate language skills with communication skills. I can spot tangled syntax or a misconjugated verb from 100 yards, but a simple question-response exchange with a stranger will knock me out stone cold
