The Dark Spire—also called Long Dong Silver, Black Spire, or Lone Tower—is a striking sandstone formation about 7 miles west of Hanksville, Utah. Rising sharply from a barren desert, its remote, otherworldly look feels straight out of Star Wars or The Lord of the Rings.

Factory Butte rises over 1,000 feet above the remote desert near Hanksville, Utah. Made of Mancos Shale, its gray, finely layered slopes create dramatic textures. With its flat top and steep sides, the isolated butte resembles an old industrial building—hence the name “Factory.
