These late night shows, and particularly their hosts, are the modern day jesters. Most people just think jesters were entertainers, but their real job was calling out what was really happening: who was scheming, who was skimming, whatever- so the ruler would have accurate info.

A few years ago, I spoke to an American girl who'd just returned to France, and asked what she thought the main difference between Americans and Europeans was.
Her answer?
