By applying a tracking method to both climate models and satellite data, @davyclimate.bsky.social found that sea ice age is a more sensitive indicator of change than ice thickness or volume.

We have a new paper out today taking a fresh look at sea ice age, showing how this variable offers new insights into Arctic climate change:

A Fair Assessment of Sea Ice Age Reduces Bias and Gives New Insight to Arctic Sea Ice Dynamics
We applied the same algorithm for diagnosing sea ice age in observations to a climate model for the first time The derived sea ice age reproduces the model dynamics but has much lower bias compar...

Good news for the Gulf Stream! A study from @unibergen.bsky.social, the Bjerknes Centre and @ox.ac.uk indicates that the Arctic Ocean compensates for less deep water formation farther south. @mariusarthun.bsky.social @ailinbrakstad.bsky.social @jakobdoerr.bsky.social

In our project "Overturning circulation in the new Arctic" (ArMOC) we have deployed two Argo floats in the Arctic (north of Svalbard). A short story on the mission of Knoll & Tott here:

Buoys on Expedition in the Arctic Ocean
Two instrument-laden buoys ("Knoll" and "Tott") were recently released north of Svalbard, soon to disappear beneath the ice.

The northern Barents Sea could be 7 degrees warmer in 2050. Two scenarios, one a 4 degree increase and the other a 2.5 increase showed similar results.

"One of the main findings is that you can't see a difference between these scenarios in 2050," says researcher Marius Årthun, with UiB and BCCR.🧪🌊
