Gutted to see Rayner go but little choice.

Deputy leadership election coming at a time when the party is uncertain of itself.

Rayner will be a loyal soldier on the backbenches - but perhaps not indefinitely?

No. 10 has completely stripped Lammy of his authority in rowing back on his Gaza statement yesterday.

Really hard to see how could want to stay or that he survives a future reshuffle.

One thing that does concern me with closure of NHS England + cuts in the aid budget is that people are going to lose jobs - 10,000 in NHS alone

Where are they all going to go?

The UK’s job market is set to become even more challenging

Wow, Trudeau’s speech was completely eviscerating

Probably the best attack on Trump and his policies anyone has given since he has taken office

He’s going to be looking for a job soon - and the Democrats could do with a new advisor

Starmer’s leadership on Ukraine and European security has been seen positively by potential Reform voters and the politically dissatisfied.

➡️ Starmer is able to fight the populists through strength on national security much more effectively than any other issue.
🆕 In today’s Playbook, will there be a Starmer bounce for his handling of Ukraine? Our polling over the weekend suggests maybe early signs of one. Starmer overtakes Farage, on who would make the best PM up 6pts from last week, though none of them still leads.

There is a chance, it seems, that Europe is able to unite, setting aside trivial divides, to strengthen #Ukraine and the collective security of the continent.

Trump’s comments “Whatever they pay him, he earned today”

“He’s a tough negotiator”

“We both love our country”

These are a complete gift for No. 10 and a real opportunity to shift the narrative
-> Starmer at his strongest since July

Interesting to see if this + defence increase = poll ratings

Everyone said the UK would have to choose between EU and America

But as Starmer leaves Trump to prepare for meeting with 18 European countries on Sunday, it now seems:

UK is getting a trade deal with USA
+
UK and Europe will strengthen and integrate defence for European autonomy

Big if it lasts

Lots to digest in Starmer’s defence statement.

A sad day to see the aid budget cut again - tragic considering the global hit caused by shut of US Aid.

But we are undeniably in a dangerous moment in time.

Defence has to go up.

If not paid from here then from where? (Without breaking manifesto)

The ‘pathway to 2.5%’ line is becoming increasingly absurd.

Much of this debate has centred around this magic number as if it will solve all of security problems - far from it.

But the point is this - we must increase our defence capabilities effectively and quickly.

Wow, that was a pretty poor performance from Badenoch at a time when she really needed to land some punches

Interesting to see Jenrick in front position behind Badenoch this week too - but this won’t be enough to quell any rumours that his leadership campaign part 2 hasn’t already begun

Gov. announce a clamp down on ticket touts and are taking evidence on dynamic pricing.

Some really positive everyday politics here that could cut through.

In particular, ending dynamic pricing, seems like an obvious win to take sooner rather than later.

Price of resale tickets to be capped under plans to tackle touts
The government is suggesting a cap on the cost of resold tickets, potentially up to 30% on top of the original price.

Starmer’s response to Elon Musk is a precise and effective.

He calls out any politician willing to amplify far-right messages.

He signals (like any good boss should) that he is willing to fight to protect his employees from abuse.

More of this and he might be able to preserve his premiership.

Lord Mandelson’s appointment as US ambassador is an undeniably big move.

The biggest of Labour grandees, this is about the most political a political appointment can get.

He brings a political shrewdness few can match. But how effectively will he be able to open Republican doors?

Lots of not so subtle shade at the amount of time Starmer has spent abroad though

Including friendly fire

The Liaison Committee is one of the most effective parts of the UK’s parliamentary democracy

Also, Starmer is much stronger in this format than PMQs

Has Wes Streeting made a mistake with outspoken interventions on assisted dying bill?

Can’t help but think if this bill does pass, it all seems a little 2016 David Cameron.

Hard to imagine having the Secretary of State executing a policy they fundamentally don’t believe will work

Now that Biden has given Ukraine the 🚦 on mid range weapons, qstn is will he allow UK + others follow suit?

As USA turns inward, 🇬🇧, 🇫🇷, 🇵🇱 + others must develop a plan for European security.

This has to start with being able to make autonomous decisions on defence.
