Betty Reid Soskin lived a long and consequential life. The country’s oldest serving National Park Service ranger passed away yesterday, on the Winter Solstice, at age 104. Betty had worked at the Rosie the Riveter World War II Home Front National Park Museum in Richmond for more than a decade.

John Burton was passionate, used the f word more than most, and was also beloved as a titan of liberalism and protector of the disenfranchised. I was honored to serve under his leadership in the State Senate and I learned a great deal from him.

On the Fourth of July, we celebrate our independence and our freedom. As America turns 249, let’s remember that our democracy is fragile and that we can never take our freedoms for granted. Most democracies around the world lasted less than 50 years.
