#ThisDayInHistory October 15, 1972–Jackie Robinson throws out the first ball of Game 2 of the 1972 World Series. As he accepts a plaque honoring the twenty-fifth anniversary of his debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers, he delivers a speech in which he expresses his desire to see a Black manager in MLB.

#ThisDayInHistory August 29, 1948–Jackie Robinson hits for the cycle against the St. Louis Cardinals. It remains one of only ten “reverse” cycles in baseball history, in which a player records a home run, triple, double, and single in that specifc order. The Dodgers win 12-7.

#ThisDayInHistory August 6, 1965–President Lyndon Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law. The VRA vastly expanded Black Americans’ right to vote. Jackie Robinson, who had traveled the country in support of voting rights and an end to segregation, praised the signing of the act.

#ThisDayInHistory August 2, 1944–Jackie Robinson’s court-martial begins. In a four-hour trial, 2nd Lieutenant Robinson and his lawyer defend against a range of charges stemming from his refusal to move to the back of an army bus.

The nine-man tribunal acquits him on all charges.
