🚨 Major 2024 election updates made to the IRA + CHIPS Dashboard:

Familiar to some, new to many: 80%+ of investment dollars and 70%+ of jobs are headed to red congressional districts across the country.

A 🧵 to understand how this looks moving forward:

From niche to necessary 🔥

"Now [Fervo] has scaled up operations dramatically at the Utah site and, in doing so, shown a 70% reduction in drilling time year on year while achieving high temperatures and flow rates. In 2026 it will start to deliver energy to the grid."

Cape Station 🫡
“Pioneers of “enhanced geothermal” techniques believe they can apply innovations from the shale industry, such as fracking and multilateral drilling, to enable geothermal almost anywhere. At the forefront is Fervo.”

"By using drilling technology advanced by the oil and gas industry, Fervo is drilling deeper, drilling sideways and drilling in new places to unlock new reserves of heat energy. The DOE estimates that EGS has the potential to power more than 65M American homes and businesses."
Fervo uses oil drilling technology to dig deep for clean geothermal energy
With a well reaching new depths and fundraising hitting new heights, Fervo Energy's enhanced geothermal system development is on a hot streak.

What does the future of enhanced geothermal power generation look like?

Fervo offered an update to partners and investors at its #capeconnect event today, showcasing progress on its 100MW Cape Station project in UT.

I tagged along and I learned a lot. Some highlights based on my notes follow… 🔌💡

Super exciting report from the U.S. Geological Survey yesterday on the potential for enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) in the Great Basin. 135 GW of EGS potential is beneath our feet there, which could roughly meet 10% of U.S. power production capacity. pubs.usgs.gov/publication/...

Enhanced geothermal systems (EGS):

- Reliable, constant source of power ✅
- Rapidly declining costs ✅
- Limited land footprint ✅
- Flexible generating capacity ✅
- Transferable oil & gas workforce ✅
- Resilience to weather-related disruptions ✅
- 90 GW of potential by 2050 ✅
To build tomorrow's power grid, the United States should look to geothermal energy
Geothermal energy offers a promising solution for stable, reliable baseload power. But to unlock its full potential, the US government must take action to reduce the barriers to entry for industry.

The policy analysis being done on advancing next-generation geothermal is really top notch. Huge appreciation to the smart people thinking hard about how to move the needle on EGS. The tech innovation is moving fast here and we need policy to keep up if we're going to meet the moment for clean firm:

"There are “literally no limits” to how much Aspen can increase capacity [in China], said CFO Ricardo Rodriguez."

Constant threats, gutting federal programs, and widespread policy uncertainty is destroying business opportunities in the U.S. Every industry and every investor has their hands tied.
Aspen Aeorgels conditionally received a $670M DOE loan to produce battery components in Georgia. Now, the company is canceling its planned manufacturing facility.

Aspen will expand production in China, Mexico, and an existing Rhode Island plant instead. www.latitudemedia.com/news/why-asp...

President Zelenskyy will be at the White House tomorrow to sign a US-Ukraine minerals deal. What does that mean for securing our critical minerals supply chain? Potentially nothing w/ some serious reputational risk. I wrote a piece this morning for Forbes evaluating the deal…🧵

To be very clear, there is no good current evidence that Ukraine has any major mineral deposits that would make a dent in U.S. demand. We have no clue if their resources - especially rare earths - make any economic sense. They have lithium, but we have plenty more.

Additionally, Rwanda-backed group invading eastern DRC and occupying resources. DRC president asking US to buy cobalt from them and get involved. Lots of moving parts.

Great thread from @cleanpowerdave.bsky.social. Similar to oil and gas “shortage worries” in the past, we’ve managed to find nearly endless lithium resources in the past few years. Tech improvements + just looking harder goes a pretty long way.
NEW: There’s now TWICE as much lithium in the world as assessed in 2018..

Last Friday, the US Geological Survey published their annual mineral commodity summaries. One major takeaway — our two largest mineral trading partners we are most reliant on? Not just China, but Canada too. Each country exports 21 different minerals that the US is > 50% reliant on via imports.

Happy to have received this outreach from King County, but man, what a microcosm of some of the building issues we face today. Planning began in 2016(!!!) and construction is tentatively scheduled to be completed mid-2028. 12 years for a water storage tank. We have to learn how to do things faster.
