I liked this poem by Stevie Smith so much that I handwrote it over one of my photos, which I felt matched the mood.

I always wondered whether there was a way to distinguish these intentionally made flints from those that occur naturally when rocks break.

The tools I use the most in I Write Like are:
- Read aloud to listen to my text
- Readability to see how easy it is to read
- Transform to get rid of extra lines & apply other bulk changes
- Word frequency to make sure I haven't overused a term
- Style analyzer for fun and inspiration.

Exactly. This is what Chekhov meant, but his idea was later condensed into the phrase “show, don’t tell,” which sounds neat but is confusing.

Honestly, my loudest thought is -- how come a human mind can knit together so many symbols, thoughts, and perfectly right words for things that I didn't even know could have a name. It's absolutely brilliant, Jen.

She loved to do this with the window open, especially when the north wind blew. That wind smelled like winter. It made the feathers swirl on the floor like a snowstorm. Her window was high above the ground, overlooking the sea. So when Snowy turned to peer into the distance, she imagined that there, at the end of that salty darkness, her frozen mountain peaks were looking back at her. One night when she opened the window to let the wind in, a huge white owl flew in. The owl looked at the feathers on the floor. "Why are you wasting all these beautiful feathers?" it asked. "You could use your hair to sew the feathers together and make your own wings. Then, you could fly back to the North." That night Snowy began working on her wings, clawing the feathers out and pulling the strands of her hair to sew the feathers together. In the morning she hid her future wings under the bed and the extra material under the deflated pillow. The text: "When her aunt was changing the sheets, she discovered the torn-up pillow and the pulled out hair. She decided that Snowy was losing her mind, and so it was dangerous to let her stay in the house. The aunt told Snowy to get ready to leave in the morning because she would move her to a special place where doctors could take care of her. Snowy had dragged her half-finished wings from under the bed and was sitting on the floor crying when the owl flew in. “You don't have time for crying," the owl said. "You must fly away before sunrise, with whatever wings you managed to make. A hurricane is coming. The north wind will change to the south wind. Wait for the strongest gust. It will take you all the way to the North.” Soon, the window frames started trembling. The south wind was rolling baskets in the yard and throwing lids at the entrance door. Snowy opened her window. She took her unfinished wings and tied them to her arms. She climbed onto the windowsill and waited for the perfect gust. And when it came, she jumped. The south wind is an all-powerful force. It can overturn ships and transport heavy turtles from one shore to another. Of course, it can lift a girl like a feather and carry her over the stormy sea, while she keeps her eyes fixed upon the frozen peaks at the horizon."
