The regular box we have is covered so we keep the litter pretty deep which helps it stay clean with frequent scooping & we use clumping litter. my moms senior cat has a shallower open box but she uses disposable plastic box liners/clumping litter & it works in a small apt with daily scoop.

We had 1 box unless it broke, but our cats before McQ all went outside & almost never used it. McQ has a litter robot box which is great. I clean surfaces as needed, & a regular box for when Flanoy is stuck inside - he hates the robot - scooped daily + adding fresh litter. McQ uses both, seems fine.

(We are in hills not far below Skyline. pic posted was from 2023 to show we get snow but very rarely. No snow here at our house but on Mt Diablo and Mt Helena I saw but it’s been in the 30’s and LOTS of hail including again tonite so far!!!)
