If you don’t know me, I’m a media scholar (initially in popular music studies) with undergrad/grad degrees in music/music criticism. Now a mid career scholar firmly entrenched as senior admin at a Christian university, with a deep love the work of Roland Barthes. Edith Stein is a role model for me.
Now I just have to write it.

Amazon delivered my packages to “a secure location” but I don’t know where that is.

Be forewarned! If you’re interested in my research, a reviewer has called my writing “tedious and imprecise.” Your mileage may vary.

Heya! How about some quick self-promotion? I’ve written books on Morrissey & Bowie (both with McFarland) and U2 (with Equinox). I’ve also written about Barthes in @barthesstudies.bsky.social.

Bluesky academics, let's get to know each other! Quote this & tell me: 1) a project you are working on & 2) an odd idea/theory you aren't working on but keep thinking about

1) what it means when celebrities lie to fans
2) Edith Stein’s embodied empathy vs. Charles Williams’ co-inherence

Is Kate Briggs the (or a) new #Barthes? Are there others?

For anyone that might have a Pilot e95s, does the posted cap wobble at all when writing? It seems to wobble a bit because of maybe how it fits in my hand when writing. I’m concerned. #fountainpen

#Barthes: “For there to be idiorrhythmy … there has to be: a diffuse, vague, uncertain Cause, a floating Telos, more fantasy than a belief.” (HtLT, 46) #KateBriggs24

Apparently, in the Middle Ages, rabbits were classed as fish (according to Barthes). (HtLT, p28) #Barthes #KateBriggs24

“There’s nothing contradictory about wanting to live alone and wanting to live together.” #Barthes HtLT p5. I agree, Roland, I agree. #KateBriggs24

We find out (on p20 of The Long Form) that the things in the apt don’t belong to Helen. The space of the apartment (not really hers) gets compressed to the space between her and her feeding baby (this space is wholly theirs). #KateBriggs24

Barthes' "délicatesse": “a refusal to take sides on complex conflictual questions phrased in such a way as to permit only yes/no answers ... the small-scale, everyday practice of values such as goodwill and attentiveness," 1/2 #KateBriggs24 #Barthes

I’m finally caught up with my Briggs and Barthes readings. #KateBriggs24 #Barthes

"The idea that the labour of writing is necessarily modest, humble, might be to replace one myth with another. But it also speaks ... to Barthes’s investment in the amateur, in ... the ways in which she chooses ... to spend her time." (Briggs, TLA, 273) #Barthes #KateBriggs24

"the bereavement I evoked two years ago, at the beginning of this Course [on "the preparation of the novel"], has profoundly and obscurely altered my desire for the world." (Barthes, TPotN, 298) #Barthes #KateBriggs24

Barthes: "[Flaubert] would throw himself onto his couch and lie there limply (this is why you should always--or never--have a couch in your study)." (TPotN, 268) Does a big yellow chair count? #Barthes #KateBriggs24

I am so behind with my Barthes and Briggs readings. How am I ever going to catch up?! #KateBriggs24 #Barthes

Barthes: "the biography I wanted to write was that of a musician, namely Schumann, and since I don't speak German, I gave up on the idea." (TPotN, 209) Full disclosure: Barthes is my favourite. But he keeps getting BETTER. #KateBriggs24 #Barthes
