"The establishment of a new colonial, capitalist world system was enabled by the sacrifice of the tens of millions made to work under the whip, or die alone drowned in the Atlantic, crushed in mines, or slowly perishing from the pitted skin and scarred lungs of smallpox."

"Researchers in 2022 tallied up the costs and benefits of this unequal international trade. They found that over the period 1990–2015 $10 trillion was transferred every year from the global south to the global north."

"The US has 750 military bases scattered across eighty countries around the world and spends $849 billion annually on defence: around 40 per cent of all government spending on defence globally, and more than the next nine countries combined."

"While migration to the US is an attractive option for many in Micronesia, it is far from easy. Not only are there the usual difficulties with relocating and navigating a new social milieu, but discrimination toward Micronesian migrants is rampant..."

"There may be support from some for the Americanization of Micronesian societies, and feelings of affinity and patriotism toward the US may be widespread, but there is plenty of animosity toward the US in the 2nd island chain as well."

"...the US treated these islands (Micronesia) as areas of strategic denial, sites for military bases, and sacrifice zones for nuclear weapons testing. The US blocked attempts for formal sovereignty... by disallowing any foreign direct investment for 3 decades."

"It is inaccurate to state that there is an urgent need for a robust US military presence in the Western Pacific to counter an imminent, articulated Chinese threat, because that threat appears to emanate more from actors in Washington than it does from Beijing."
